Bollinger Bands vs Keltner Channels on MT4: Same Data, One Winner (2026)

Bollinger Bands vs Keltner Channels on MT4: Same Data, One Winner (2026) cover

Key takeaways

  • On the same 16,926 EURUSD 5-minute bars, the TTM-style Keltner squeeze beat the plain Bollinger squeeze: 42.7% vs 39.3% continuation, with far fewer signals.
  • Neither crossed 50%. Both squeezes, traded blindly, lost money before spread on this pair and timeframe.
  • Keltner Channels filter noise better because ATR ignores the tiny closes that inflate standard deviation during quiet hours.
  • If you must pick one for MT4, pick Keltner for entries and keep Bollinger for context. Or better, filter both by session.

Keltner Channels caught EURUSD breakouts slightly better than Bollinger Bands in my 2026 test: the TTM-style squeeze continued 42.7% of the time against 39.3% for the plain Bollinger squeeze, on identical data and identical measurement. Neither indicator produced a profitable breakout signal on its own on the 5-minute chart.

What is the actual difference between the two?

Both draw an envelope around a moving average. The difference is what the envelope breathes with. Bollinger Bands expand and contract with standard deviation of price. Keltner Channels expand and contract with the Average True Range. Standard deviation reacts to every tiny close, ATR reacts to real bar-to-bar movement. During quiet hours the two disagree the most, and that is exactly where the signal quality splits.

How did the head-to-head test work?

Price envelope indicators drawn over candlesticks on MetaTrader

Same data as the Bollinger squeeze test: 16,926 real EURUSD 5-minute bars, June 3 to August 26, 2026. Two squeeze definitions ran side by side. The Bollinger version fired when bandwidth fell into the lowest fifth of the last 300 bars. The Keltner version used the TTM definition, both Bollinger Bands sitting fully inside the Keltner Channels. In both cases the trade was the first close outside the envelope, measured two hours later.

Keltner filters more noise, yet neither squeeze reaches the coin flip line on EURUSD M5.

The Keltner squeeze fired only 89 times against 224, and the signals it kept were a little better. That is the ATR filter doing its job: it refused most of the dead Asian-session contractions that the standard deviation version happily flagged. But look at the ceiling. Even the winner continued less than 43% of the time and still averaged a small loss. Filtering improved the signal, it did not create an edge.

So which one should an MT4 trader use?

For breakout entries, Keltner. Fewer, cleaner signals, and the channel doubles as a trailing structure for exits. For reading volatility context, Bollinger, because the sharp expansion after a squeeze is easier to see. What actually moved the needle in every test I have run this summer, including the RSI period test and the session range test, was time of day, not the indicator. Whichever envelope you draw, trade it in the London or New York morning and stay out of the Asian drift.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run Keltner Channels on stock MT4?

Not out of the box. MT4 ships Bollinger Bands natively, Keltner Channels need a free custom indicator. Installation takes two minutes and the steps are identical to any custom tool, see how to install an MT4 indicator. On MT5 the process is the same through the Navigator window, described in how to add indicators to MT5.

What Keltner settings did the test use?

20-period EMA with 1.5 ATR, the most common defaults. Widening to 2.0 ATR cuts signals further without changing the direction of the result.

Is the TTM squeeze the same as the Bollinger squeeze?

No. The TTM squeeze is a specific condition, Bollinger Bands trading fully inside Keltner Channels. It marks deeper compression than a simple bandwidth percentile, which is why it fired 89 times against 224 in the same window.

Would results differ on gold or GBPUSD?

Very likely, faster pairs give breakouts more room. This test is EURUSD only and I will not claim numbers I have not measured. For gold specifically, start with the gold indicator rankings.
