Bollinger Bands Settings for MT4 and MT5: What Actually Matters (2026)

Bollinger Bands Settings for MT4 and MT5: What Actually Matters (2026) cover

Key takeaways

  • The default 20-period, 2.0 deviation setting is the right starting point on both MT4 and MT5, and most setting changes solve nothing.
  • Change the timeframe before the settings: the same bands behave completely differently on M5 and H1.
  • On EURUSD M5, my measured data shows band signals are close to a coin flip, so settings tuning is polish on a weak signal.
  • Setup takes under a minute on either platform, full click path below.

To set up Bollinger Bands on MT4, open Insert, then Indicators, then Trend, then Bollinger Bands, and keep the defaults of 20 periods and 2 standard deviations applied to the close price. The defaults are correct for most uses. What actually changes the indicator’s behavior is the chart timeframe and the session you trade, not the numbers in the settings window.

How do you add Bollinger Bands on MT4?

Setting up Bollinger Bands on the MetaTrader 4 platform
  • Open the chart you want, then the menu path Insert, Indicators, Trend, Bollinger Bands.
  • Period: 20. Deviations: 2. Shift: 0. Apply to: Close.
  • Pick a visible color for the bands and press OK. The three lines appear immediately.
  • To edit later, right click the chart, choose Indicators List, select Bollinger Bands, press Edit.

If you are new to the platform itself, the full walkthrough with screenshots lives in how to install an MT4 indicator.

How do you add Bollinger Bands on MT5?

The path is nearly identical: Insert, Indicators, Trend, Bollinger Bands, same defaults. MT5 also lets you drag the indicator from the Navigator window straight onto the chart. The general process for any MT5 indicator, including custom ones, is covered in how to add indicators to MT5.

Which settings should you use per timeframe?

TimeframePeriodDeviationWhat the bands mean here
M5 scalping202.0Noise envelope. Touches are a coin flip, see the data below.
M15 to M30202.0Session structure becomes visible, squeezes mark real quiet periods.
H1 swing202.0 to 2.5Band rides mark trends. Wider deviation cuts false extremes.
H4 and daily202.5Slow regime view. Combine with a trend tool, not with touch trades.

Notice the period never changes. Shortening it to 10 makes the bands hug price and triple your false signals. Lengthening to 50 turns them into a lagging channel. The 20-period average is standard for a reason, the useful variable is the deviation multiplier, and even that only matters above M30.

What do the measured numbers say about the defaults?

Reviewing Bollinger Band settings across chart timeframes

I do not repeat platform folklore without checking it. On 16,926 real EURUSD 5-minute bars from June to August 2026, price closing outside a default band moved back inside within one hour 50.4% of the time. A coin flip. And the classic squeeze breakout continued only 39.3% of the time, losing 0.9 pips on average. The complete methodology and session breakdown are in the Bollinger squeeze test on 224 breakouts, and the comparison against an ATR-based envelope is in Bollinger Bands vs Keltner Channels.

The honest conclusion for settings hunters: no deviation value rescues a signal that is structurally weak on your timeframe. Fix the session and the confirmation first. Good companions are a trend filter like the Supertrend, momentum confirmation like the correctly configured RSI, and an exit rule like the ATR trailing stop.

Frequently asked questions

Should I apply the bands to close, open, or median price?

Close. Every published study and every default uses the close, and switching price fields changes the bands cosmetically without improving any measured outcome.

Do professional traders change the deviation to 1.5?

Some mean-reversion systems do, because 1.5 deviations produce many more touches. More touches is not more edge, it is more trades around a 50% baseline. If you go tighter, you need a strict session filter, the data for which is in the best hours to trade EURUSD.

Can I put two sets of bands on one chart?

Yes, add the indicator twice, for example 2.0 and 3.0 deviations. The gap between them shows how extreme a move is. It is a readable context tool, just not an entry signal by itself.

Are Bollinger Bands enough on their own?

No. In my measurements they describe volatility well and predict direction poorly. Build around them with structure and momentum, starting from the tested indicator combinations or the broader indicators explained guide if you are starting from zero.
