DeMARK Indicator for MT4: Complete Guide (2026)

MT4 candlestick chart illustrating a DeMARK TD Sequential reversal count
TL;DR

  • The DeMARK indicator for MT4 is not one tool but a family: the built-in DeMarker oscillator (one line that swings 0 to 1), the TD Sequential 1-9 count, and the TD Line trendline method. Most search confusion comes from mixing them up.
  • DeMarker (the oscillator) measures buying versus selling pressure on a 0 to 1 scale. The classic levels are 0.30 (oversold) and 0.70 (overbought), and period 14 is the common default, though many of Tom DeMark’s own ideas used 13.
  • The oscillator does not repaint, but the TD Sequential count and a freshly drawn TD Line can change while a bar is still forming. Read both only on closed candles.
  • Treat any DeMARK tool as a confirmation filter on a trend or at a real support/resistance level, not a standalone buy or sell button. In a strong trend the oscillator can sit “overbought” for a long time and never reverse.

The DeMARK indicator for MT4 is best understood as a set of tools that trace back to trader Tom DeMark: the DeMarker oscillator that ships inside MetaTrader, the TD Sequential 1-9 counting method, and the TD Line trendline technique. They share a name but are read in completely different ways, and knowing which one you actually want saves a lot of frustration. This guide separates them in plain English, gives the real settings, and tells the honest truth about repainting and accuracy that most download pages skip.

DeMarker vs DeMARK: which one are you actually looking for?

This is the biggest point of confusion, so it goes first. “DeMarker” and “DeMARK” sound identical out loud but point at different things.

  • DeMarker (DeM) is the oscillator that already ships with MetaTrader, under Insert, Indicators, Oscillators, DeMarker. It draws a single line between 0 and 1 that measures whether recent demand or supply is winning. You download nothing for this one.
  • DeMARK usually means the wider body of work from Tom DeMark, in particular the TD Sequential count (the 1-9 reversal tool) and the TD Lines trendline method. These are not built into MT4. They are the indicators people hunt for as downloads, and they behave nothing like the simple oscillator.

So if you typed “demark indicator mt4” hoping for the famous 1-9 reversal count, the built-in DeMarker is not it. And if you only wanted a clean overbought and oversold reading, you already have DeMarker. Quick gut check: a single 0-to-1 line is the oscillator; numbers printed above and below candles, or a trendline projecting a breakout target, is the TD family.

TD basics in plain English: the 1-9 Sequential count

MT4 candlestick chart illustrating a DeMARK TD Sequential reversal count

TD Sequential tries to answer one question: is this trend getting tired? It does that by counting, not by drawing a wavy line. This count is what most people mean by “the DeMARK count.”

The core idea is the Setup, a run of nine consecutive closes that each compare to the close four bars earlier. A bearish (sell) Setup needs nine bars in a row where each close is higher than the close four bars before it; a bullish (buy) Setup needs nine where each close is lower than four bars back. When the count reaches 9, the trend has stretched far enough that a pause or reversal becomes more likely.

  • 1 through 8: the trend is running and the count is building. Nothing to act on yet.
  • 9: the Setup completes. The heads-up that the move may be exhausting, especially if 8 and 9 print at a fresh extreme.
  • After 9: a stricter 13-bar Countdown can begin for confirmation, but for most MT4 traders the simple 1-9 Setup is the workhorse signal.

Here is the honest part. A 9 is a warning, not a trade. It says the trend is overextended, not that price turns next candle. I have watched charts print a 9, keep going, and print a whole second Setup before reversing. Use it to get cautious or look for a separate trigger, not to blindly fade the move. The logic of comparing a close to an earlier close overlaps with how a lot of forex indicators are explained as momentum tools.

The DeMARK trendline (TD Line) method, step by step

The TD Line is the part of the DeMARK toolkit that finds a trade with a target, and it is the method behind my own free indicator. Most traders draw trendlines left to right by eye, connecting whichever highs or lows look nice. DeMark flipped that. TD Lines are drawn right to left using objective pivot points, so two traders on the same chart get the same line.

How a TD Line is built

  • A TD Demand Line connects the two most recent qualified pivot lows (a low with higher lows on both sides), drawn from the most recent one backward.
  • A TD Supply Line connects the two most recent qualified pivot highs, again most recent first.
  • Because the rule for what counts as a pivot is fixed, the line is mechanical. No eyeballing, no bias.

How it finds the trade

The signal is a qualified break of the line, not just any poke through it. DeMark added filters so a weak, low-conviction break is ignored. When price breaks a TD Supply line upward with conviction, the method projects a price objective by measuring the largest distance between line and price during formation, then adding that distance to the breakout point. That gives you an actual target instead of a vague “it should go up.” It pairs naturally with structure reads, the way many traders add a buy sell signal indicator for the entry trigger.

Real settings that work: period, levels, and timeframes

For the DeMarker oscillator, the settings are refreshingly few. There is essentially one input that matters plus the levels you draw on it.

SettingCommon valueWhat it does
Period14 (default) or 13How many bars are averaged. 14 is MT4’s default; many DeMark-style setups prefer 13 for a slightly quicker read.
Oversold level0.30Below this, selling pressure looks stretched; watch for buyers.
Overbought level0.70Above this, buying pressure looks stretched; watch for sellers.
Optional bands0.20 / 0.80Stricter levels that cut noise on lower timeframes at the cost of fewer signals.

Period 13 vs 14

The difference is small but real. Period 14 is smoother and gives fewer false flips, which is why MetaTrader uses it as the default. Period 13 reacts a touch faster, so the line hits 0.30 and 0.70 a little sooner. For swing trading on H1 and above, 14 is a sensible baseline; if you want earlier signals and can tolerate more noise, try 13 and compare them side by side. Neither is “correct,” they are two points on the same dial. That baseline-then-tune logic applies to most oscillators, which is why I point newer traders to a guide on best RSI settings for forex to learn the rhythm.

Which timeframes are reliable

DeMARK tools were designed around closing prices, so they reward patience. H1, H4, and the daily are where I trust them most because each closed bar carries real information. On M1 and M5 the oscillator pings 0.70 and 0.30 constantly and the count restarts so often it becomes noise. If you must go lower, tighten the bands to 0.20 and 0.80 and demand confluence with structure.

Does it repaint? The honest answer (and why it matters)

This is where I lose patience with most download pages, because they either lie or stay silent. Here is the real picture.

  • The DeMarker oscillator does not repaint. Once a bar closes, its value is fixed forever. The only thing that “moves” is the live, still-forming bar, which is normal and true of every indicator.
  • The TD Sequential count can change on the live bar. A bar might be showing a “7” while it is forming, then fail to close in the right place and the count resets. That is not cheating, it is the math doing its job, but it means you must read the number only after the candle closes.
  • A freshly drawn TD Line can shift. When a new qualified pivot prints, the line re-anchors to newer points, so a line drawn live can look different an hour later. Again, this settles once the pivots are confirmed.

So nothing here repaints in the dishonest sense of rewriting closed history to fake a backtest. But the live bar is provisional, and that distinction matters. Any tool that quietly redraws past, closed signals to look perfect is the kind I throw out, which is why I care so much about non-repaint indicators. For the deeper reasoning on why a clean closed-bar signal beats a pretty backtest, the non-repaint arrow indicator write-up covers the trap. My own free DeMARK Trend Line tool locks its signals on the close for exactly this reason.

How to install the DeMARK indicator on MT4 in 4 steps

Installing a custom DeMARK indicator into the MetaTrader 4 platform

Installing a custom DeMARK indicator is the same short routine as any MT4 add-on. You are dropping an .ex4 (compiled) or .mq4 (source) file into the right folder.

StepAction
1In MT4, click File, then Open Data Folder.
2Open the MQL4 folder, then the Indicators subfolder.
3Copy your DeMARK .ex4 (and .mq4 if you have it) file into that Indicators folder.
4Back in MT4, right-click the Navigator panel and choose Refresh, then drag the indicator onto your chart and set the period.

The .ex4 is the runnable file and the .mq4 is the editable source; you only need the .ex4 to trade it. If the indicator does not show after copying, restart MT4 fully. For a fuller walkthrough with screenshots, see how to install an MT4 indicator. The official folder behavior is documented in the MetaTrader 4 user guide.

How to trade it: signals, filters, and a worked example

I use any DeMARK tool as a second voice, never the only one. The pattern is always: establish the trend or level first, then let DeMARK confirm exhaustion or a break.

A simple, honest workflow

  • Find the context. Is price at an obvious support, resistance, or round number? Is the bigger timeframe trending or ranging? No context, no trade.
  • Wait for the DeMARK cue. The oscillator dips below 0.30 at support, a TD Setup prints a 9 into resistance, or a TD Line gives a qualified break.
  • Demand a trigger. A bullish close back above 0.30, a candle rejection, or a structure break. The cue alone is not the entry.
  • Define risk first. Stop beyond the swing that produced the signal, before you think about any target.

Worked example (educational only)

Say EUR/USD pulls back into a clean daily support zone on H4. The DeMarker line slides under 0.30, telling you sellers are stretched right at a level that already matters. You do not buy yet. You wait for the next H4 candle to close back above 0.30 with a bullish body. That close is your trigger, your stop goes below the pullback low, and your first reference for an objective is the prior swing high. The DeMARK reading did not create the trade. It flagged a ripe spot, and the level plus the close did the rest. This filtered approach sits alongside trend tools, which is why I often run it inside one of the best forex indicator combinations rather than solo. None of this is a promise of any outcome, it is a process for reading the chart.

Common mistakes that wreck DeMARK trades

Almost every complaint about DeMARK tools traces back to one of these.

Trading the count in a strong trend

A 9 in a powerful trend is the most expensive signal there is. Strong trends print 9s and keep going. TD Sequential shines when a trend is mature and stalling at a level, not mid fresh move.

Fading the oscillator in a ranging vacuum

In a tight range the DeMarker line bounces between 0.30 and 0.70 with no edge. “Overbought” in chop just means “slightly higher than recently.” Without a real level under it, the reading is meaningless.

Reading the live bar

Acting on a count or line before the candle closes is how people convince themselves the tool repaints. It does not; you jumped early. Wait for the close.

Using it completely alone

No single oscillator or count carries a trade by itself, and chasing a most accurate forex indicator that needs no confirmation is the fastest way to disappointment. DeMARK is a filter, full stop.

Free DeMARK indicator download for MT4

Two practical things about getting one. First, accuracy varies between versions, and that is a flaw in the code, not the math. Different programmers interpret DeMark’s pivot and qualified-break rules slightly differently, which is exactly why two “TD Sequential” indicators show different counts on the same chart. When you test one, watch how it defines a pivot and whether it locks signals on the close.

Second, on safety: only run an .ex4 from a source you trust, scan downloads, and prefer files that do not force you to hand an email to a random portal just to grab them. A clean, non-repaint version you can read on closed bars beats a flashy one that redraws history. If you also trade metals, the same care applies when you pick up gold and XAUUSD indicators or build a wider kit from a vetted list of the best MT4 forex indicators. For background on the original concept, the Investopedia entry on the DeMarker indicator is a solid neutral reference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the DeMARK indicator free on MT4?

The DeMarker oscillator is completely free because it ships inside MetaTrader 4 already. The TD Sequential count and TD Line tools are not built in, so you download a custom version, and many good ones are free. My own DeMARK Trend Line indicator is free and does not require an email to grab.

What is the best DeMarker setting for forex?

A period of 14 with the 0.30 and 0.70 levels is the standard baseline, and period 13 is a faster alternative worth comparing. The setting matters less than the timeframe and context, so favor H1 and above and only act on the level when price is at real support or resistance. Test any change on your own pairs before trading it.

Does the TD Sequential indicator repaint?

It does not repaint closed history, but the count on the live, still-forming bar can change before that bar closes. A “7” can reset if the candle fails to close in the qualifying spot. Read the count only after the candle has closed and you avoid the false impression of repainting.

Can beginners use the DeMARK trendline method?

Yes, because a good TD Line indicator draws the line for you using fixed pivot rules, so there is no guesswork. The key habit for a beginner is to treat the qualified break as a cue, wait for the close, and always set the stop before the target. Start on H4 or the daily where signals are cleaner and slower to read.

  1. So if the oscillator is already in MT4, why do people sell paid TD Sequential versions for so much? Is the free one you offer the trendline method or the count?

  2. Great write up. The bit about reading the count only on closed bars saved me a headache, i was getting so confused why my 7 kept turning into a 5 on the live candle. makes total sense now.

  3. thanks, finally clear. i kept downloading DeMarker thinking it was the 1-9 count one. now i get it.
