Trend Indicators vs Oscillators: Trend Rules Made Money in 14 of 36 Runs and Oscillators in 1 of 16, Yet the Oscillators Took 4 of the Top 5 on EURUSD M5

Key takeaways

  • I split 21 indicator rules into four families: 9 trend rules, 5 momentum, 4 overbought/oversold oscillators and 3 breakouts. Same exit and cost for all, on EURUSD and gold, M5 and M15.
  • Trend rules made money in 14 of 36 runs and passed 4. The oscillators made money in 1 of 16 and passed none.
  • Yet on EURUSD M5 the oscillators took 4 of the top 5 places, ranks 1, 2, 3, 5. Every rule lost there, and the oscillators simply lost slowest.
  • On gold M15 the same four oscillators ranked 13, 14, 19, 21 of 21. Which family “wins” depended on the chart.
  • Breakouts were the weakest family: 1 of 12 runs in profit, and the reversed signal did better than the real one in 11 of 12.

The oldest argument in indicator trading is trend against oscillator. One camp follows the move with moving averages and Supertrend. The other fades it with RSI and Stochastic at overbought and oversold. Most comparisons pick one indicator from each side and one chart.

I had 21 rules on four charts from the ranked forex indicators list, all with one exit, so I sorted them by family and compared the families.

Which rules are in each family?

A trending candlestick chart, where trend rules beat overbought and oversold oscillators
FamilyRulesWhat it does
TrendIchimoku Tenkan/Kijun cross, Supertrend 10/3, DMI +DI/-DI cross, EMA 9/21 crossover, DI cross with ADX > 25, EMA 20/50 crossover, HalfTrend 2, Heikin Ashi colour flip, Parabolic SAR flipBuys after price turns up and stays with the move
MomentumMACD zero-line cross, MACD 12/26/9 signal cross, CCI 20 cross of +/-100, QQE 14/5, RSI 14 cross of 50Buys when momentum crosses a midline or signal line
Overbought/oversoldRSI 14 exit from 30/70, Bollinger 20/2 re-entry, Williams %R 14 exit from -80/-20, Stochastic 14/3/3 cross in 20/80Buys when price comes back from an extreme low, sells from an extreme high
BreakoutDonchian 20 breakout, Bollinger 20/2 breakout, Keltner/ATR channel breakoutBuys when price closes outside a recent range or band

Exit for everyone: stop 1.5 ATR, target 3 ATR, 48 bars at most, one trade at a time, 1 pip on EURUSD and $0.30 on gold. Data: EURUSD M5 June 3 to August 26, 2026, 16,926 bars; gold M5 June 16 to August 26, 13,736 bars; M15 built from them. A pass needs profit after cost, profit in both halves and a result above the 95th percentile of random entries.

Which family made money most often?

FamilyRunsIn profitPassedAverage rank of 21
Trend361449.7
Momentum205211.4
Overbought/oversold161010.9
Breakout121014.3

Trend rules were the only family with a profit in more than a third of runs, and four of the six passes on the whole list were trend rules: the EMA 9/21 cross twice, the DMI cross and the DI cross with ADX above 25. The other two were momentum: the MACD zero-line cross and RSI crossing 50. The oscillators and breakouts passed nothing. The momentum rules that passed are themselves trend rules in disguise: a MACD zero-line cross is an EMA 12/26 cross, as shown in MACD vs moving average crossover.

Does the answer change from chart to chart?

Breakout-1.54-1.18-0.70+0.18

Pips on EURUSD, dollars an ounce on gold, after cost. Rank 1 is best of 21.

On EURUSD M5 the oscillators averaged rank 2.8, far ahead of the trend rules at 12.4. On gold M15 it was the other way round: 16.8 against 9. Both rankings are true and neither is a verdict on the indicators. EURUSD M5 drifted sideways in small bars where nothing paid the spread; the oscillators lost -0.81 pips a trade against -1.35 for trend rules, which is losing less, not winning. Gold M15 moved in long legs, which trend rules ride and oscillators stand in front of. A single-chart test of RSI against trend rules, with the same twist, is in RSI trend rules vs overbought and oversold.

What if you traded each signal the other way?

Reversed signal did betterEURUSD M5EURUSD M15Gold M5Gold M15Total
Trend8 of 95 of 93 of 95 of 921 of 36
Momentum5 of 53 of 53 of 51 of 512 of 20
Overbought/oversold0 of 42 of 40 of 44 of 46 of 16
Breakout3 of 33 of 33 of 32 of 311 of 12

Same bars, same exit, buy where the rule says sell. If a family had a real edge, reversing it should hurt in nearly every run.

The oscillators held up best: reversing them did better in only 6 of 16 runs, 4 of them on gold M15, where buying the oversold dip means standing in front of a trend. Reversing the trend rules did better in 21 of 36, almost half, and reversing the breakouts did better in 11 of 12. A breakout that does better faded than followed is a range market, and the same pattern showed up in reversal indicators vs fading the last hour.

Do oscillators win more often?

Winning trades, family averageEURUSD M5EURUSD M15Gold M5Gold M15
Trend31.6%36.0%36.7%36.2%
Momentum31.0%35.5%34.2%37.7%
Overbought/oversold35.8%34.3%34.1%31.3%
Breakout29.5%33.9%34.2%37.8%

Not with this exit. With a target twice the stop, every family won 29% to 38% of trades, and the oscillators did not stand out except on EURUSD M5. The usual claim that oscillators win more often holds with a small target and a wide stop, which is a different exit, not a better indicator. Williams %R and Stochastic side by side are in Williams %R vs Stochastic.

So trend or oscillator?

  • Trend rules, if you need a family. 14 of 36 runs in profit and 4 passes, against 1 and 0 for the oscillators.
  • But check the chart first. The oscillators ranked top on EURUSD M5 and bottom on gold M15. The market decided which family looked good.
  • Losing slowest is not an edge. The oscillators’ top places on EURUSD M5 came with a loss of -0.81 pips a trade.
  • Skip pure breakouts on short charts. 1 of 12 runs in profit, and the reversed signal did better in 11 of 12.

Where to find all 21 rules in MetaTrader and the settings used is in the forex indicators list for MT4. A trend rule tested on its own is in Ichimoku vs trend following.

Frequently asked questions

Are trend indicators better than oscillators?

On these four charts, yes, but narrowly. Trend rules made money in 14 of 36 runs, oscillators in 1 of 16, and only 4 trend runs passed.

Why did RSI and Stochastic rank first on EURUSD M5?

Because every rule lost there and they lost least, about 0.8 pips a trade against 1.4 for trend rules.

Is MACD a trend indicator or an oscillator?

It is drawn like an oscillator but its crosses are moving average crosses. I counted it as momentum, and its zero-line cross behaved like a trend rule.

Do breakout indicators work on M5?

Not here. Donchian, Bollinger and Keltner breakouts were in profit in 1 of 12 runs, the one on gold M15.

Can I combine a trend indicator with an oscillator?

You can, but combining did not fix it in my earlier test: see indicator combo vs single indicator.
