Envelopes vs Bollinger Bands: Half the EURUSD Envelope Breaks Came in 4 Busy Hours, and Its Breakout Lost Less on 3 of 4 Charts

Key takeaways

  • Envelopes and Bollinger Bands both draw two lines around a moving average. Envelopes keeps them a fixed percentage away; Bollinger moves them with the standard deviation. I put Envelopes 14, 0.10 against Bollinger 20, 2 on EURUSD and gold, M5 and M15, with the same exit.
  • On EURUSD M5, half of all Envelopes breaks came in 4 hours of the day, Bollinger breaks only 23%. In the six hours after midnight UTC Envelopes broke 4.9% of the time, Bollinger 27.4%.
  • Bollinger is the busier signal on EURUSD: 17.3 breaks a day on M5 against 2.0. On gold it is the other way round, 28.1 Envelopes breaks a day against 16.1.
  • When Envelopes broke on EURUSD M5, Bollinger had broken too within 3 bars 80% of the time. Only 9.5% of Bollinger breaks came with an Envelopes break.
  • The Envelopes breakout lost less than the Bollinger breakout on 3 of 4 charts, but neither band passed the full test on any chart.

Every list of band indicators puts these two side by side, usually with one line each: Bollinger Bands adapt to volatility, Envelopes do not. That is true, and it sounds like a clear win for Bollinger. The more useful question is what the difference does to the signals: when they fire, how often, and whether either one makes money once the spread is paid.

The full test of Envelopes on its own is in Envelopes indicator tested. This page is the head-to-head.

What is the difference between Envelopes and Bollinger Bands?

A trading screen with two band indicators over the price chart
Envelopes 14, 0.10Bollinger Bands 20, 2
Middle line14-bar simple average20-bar simple average
Distance to the bands0.10% of the average, fixed2 standard deviations of the last 20 closes
When the market gets busyBands stay where they areBands widen
EURUSD M5 width, middle 90% of bars22.8 to 23.4 pips4.2 to 27.9 pips
Gold M5 width, middle 90% of bars$8.01 to $9.35$7.42 to $49.56

In pips the envelope barely moves: its width changes only with the price itself. The Bollinger width on EURUSD M5 ranged more than six times from narrow to wide. That single difference decides almost everything below.

How was it tested?

A close up of a chart comparing Envelopes with Bollinger Bands
  • Data: EURUSD M5 from June 3 to August 26, 2026, 16,926 bars; gold M5 from June 16 to August 26, 13,736 bars. M15 built from the same bars.
  • Same two rules on both bands: the breakout (first close outside, trade with it) and the fade (close back inside after a close outside, trade back towards the middle).
  • Exit and cost: stop 1.5 ATR, target 3 ATR, 48 bars at most, one trade at a time. 1 pip on EURUSD, $0.30 an ounce on gold, from spread and swap costs in MT4. Halves split on July 15, and each run was compared with 200 random-entry runs with the same exit.

Which band breaks more often?

Breaks per trading dayEURUSD M5EURUSD M15Gold M5Gold M15
Envelopes 14, 0.102.02.728.111.6
Bollinger 20, 217.36.316.15.8
Bars closed outside, Envelopes2.2%9.3%44.1%68.4%
Bars closed outside, Bollinger11.3%12.7%12.3%12.9%

Bollinger was remarkably steady: price closed outside it on 11% to 13% of bars on every chart, because the bands rescale to whatever the market is doing. Envelopes ran from 2.2% on EURUSD M5 to 68% on gold M15. The same indicator with the same input was a rare event on one chart and the normal state on another. If you want a band that means the same on every symbol, that is Bollinger’s real advantage, the same one we saw in ATR channel vs Bollinger Bands.

At what time of day does each band break?

Share of breaksEURUSD M5EURUSD M15Gold M5Gold M15
Envelopes, in its 4 busiest hours51.6%39.6%22.6%23.7%
Bollinger, in its 4 busiest hours23.2%29.0%27.5%38.9%
Envelopes, 00:00 to 05:59 UTC4.9%11.0%28.2%25.1%
Bollinger, 00:00 to 05:59 UTC27.4%28.4%29.3%33.7%

This is the finding that the one-line comparisons miss. On EURUSD, the envelope’s busiest hours were 08:00 and 12:00 to 14:00 UTC, the London open and the overlap with New York. A fixed 23-pip band can only be reached when the market really moves. Bollinger’s busiest hours on EURUSD M5 were 06:00, 11:00, 00:00 and 05:00 UTC, and more than a quarter of its breaks came in the quiet Asian hours, when a tiny range makes the bands narrow and any small push closes outside them.

So on EURUSD the “dumb” fixed band was the better volatility filter: it only spoke in busy hours. On gold, where 0.10% is far too narrow, Envelopes lost that property and broke at any hour.

Do the two bands break at the same time?

Within 3 bars, same directionEURUSD M5EURUSD M15Gold M5Gold M15
Envelopes breaks with a Bollinger break79.5%72.7%46.5%33.6%
Bollinger breaks with an Envelopes break9.5%32.5%80.0%66.3%

On EURUSD an envelope break was nearly always a Bollinger break too, a subset of the big ones. On gold the roles swapped: most Bollinger breaks came with an envelope break, and the envelope added many more of its own.

Which band made more money?

Net per trade after costEURUSD M5, pipsEURUSD M15, pipsGold M5, $/ozGold M15, $/oz
Envelopes breakout−0.92 (103)−0.76 (122)−0.93 (638)+1.90 (197)
Bollinger breakout−1.64 (699)−1.30 (233)−0.35 (514)−0.78 (174)
Envelopes fade−2.28 (114)−0.02 (133)−0.26 (681)−2.08 (198)
Bollinger fade−0.80 (869)−0.89 (274)−0.41 (619)−1.49 (201)
Random entries, median−1.02−1.25−0.59−0.27

Trades in brackets. The envelope breakout lost less than the Bollinger breakout on EURUSD M5, EURUSD M15 and gold M15, and on gold M15 it was the only one of the 16 band runs in profit, +$1.82 and +$1.95 an ounce a trade in the two halves. It still did not beat the 95th percentile of random entries on that chart, $2.45. For fading the band it was a draw, 2 charts each, and Bollinger’s fade on EURUSD M5 lost less than random entries while the envelope fade lost more than twice as much. No run of either band passed all three checks.

The breakout result fits the hour table. On EURUSD an envelope break meant a move in a busy hour, and following it cost less than following a Bollinger break, more than a quarter of which happened at night. Fading those same busy-hour moves was the worst thing to do on EURUSD M5. Bollinger strategies on their own are tested in the Bollinger Bands 5-minute strategy and Bollinger Bands vs RSI.

Which one would I put on the chart?

  • For one setting on every symbol, Bollinger. It kept price outside on 11% to 13% of bars on all 4 charts; Envelopes 0.10 ran from 2% to 68%.
  • For a band that only speaks in busy EURUSD hours, Envelopes. Half its M5 breaks came in four hours, against under a quarter for Bollinger.
  • Do not fade either band on its own. The fade lost after cost on all 8 runs.
  • If you use Envelopes on gold, change the deviation first. The numbers for each deviation are in Envelopes indicator settings for MT4.

Frequently asked questions

Is Envelopes better than Bollinger Bands?

Neither passed the full test here. The Envelopes breakout lost less than the Bollinger breakout on 3 of 4 charts, and the fades split 2 to 2. Bollinger kept a steady 11% to 13% of bars outside on every chart, so it needs no tuning per symbol.

What is the difference between Envelopes and Bollinger Bands?

Envelopes put the bands a fixed percentage of price away from a moving average. Bollinger Bands put them a number of standard deviations away, so they widen in busy markets and narrow in quiet ones.

Why does Bollinger give so many signals at night?

Because in quiet hours the standard deviation is small and the bands sit close to price. On EURUSD M5, 27.4% of Bollinger breaks came between 00:00 and 05:59 UTC, against 4.9% for Envelopes.

Can I use Envelopes and Bollinger Bands together?

On EURUSD an envelope break came with a Bollinger break 73% to 80% of the time, so the envelope works as a filter for the bigger Bollinger breaks. This test did not check the combination as a system.
