Envelopes Indicator Tested: The Default Band Held Price on 98% of EURUSD Bars and 56% of Gold Bars, and 0 of 20 Runs Passed

Key takeaways

  • Envelopes is a built-in MetaTrader indicator: a 14-bar moving average with two lines a fixed 0.10% above and below it. I tested five common Envelopes rules on EURUSD and gold, M5 and M15: 16,926 EURUSD bars and 13,736 gold bars.
  • The same default band meant opposite things on the two markets. On EURUSD M5, 0.10% was about 23 pips wide and price closed outside it on only 2.2% of bars. On gold M5 it was about $8 wide and price closed outside on 44% of bars, 68% on M15.
  • On EURUSD M5 half of all band breaks came in four hours of the day, 08:00 and 12:00 to 14:00 UTC, and only 4.9% in the six quiet hours after midnight.
  • The textbook fade, selling when price comes back inside from above the band, lost after cost on all 4 charts. On EURUSD M5 it lost 2.28 pips a trade, more than twice as much as random entries.
  • 0 of 20 Envelopes runs passed all three checks. The closest was the breakout on gold M15: +$1.90 an ounce a trade, in profit in both halves, but below the 95th percentile of random entries.

Envelopes is one of the oldest band tools on a chart. It ships with MetaTrader 4 and 5 under Indicators, Trend, and draws a moving average with a copy shifted up and a copy shifted down by a fixed percentage of price. The default in MT4 is a 14-bar simple average and a deviation of 0.10.

Guides teach two opposite ways to trade it. One says the lines are a range: sell when price has been above the upper line and closes back inside, buy the mirror image at the lower line. The other says a close outside the band is the start of a move and should be followed. Both are rules, so both can be counted on real bars with a fixed exit.

What does the Envelopes indicator measure?

A price chart with two Envelopes bands around a moving average
PartHow it is calculated
MiddleA moving average of the close, 14-bar simple by default (MT4 does not draw it, only the two bands)
Upper bandMiddle × (1 + deviation / 100), so 0.10 means 0.10% above
Lower bandMiddle × (1 − deviation / 100)
WidthFixed share of price. It does not widen when the market gets busy, unlike Bollinger Bands
Settings in MT4Period, shift, MA method, applied price, deviation

The fixed width is the whole point of the tool, and it is also the catch. 0.10% of 1.17 is about 0.0012, so the band is 23 pips from line to line on EURUSD. 0.10% of a $4,100 gold price is $4.10 on each side, about $8 in total. Whether that is wide or narrow depends on how far the market usually moves, and the two markets move very differently.

How was it tested?

A trader checking whether price closed outside the envelope
  • Data: EURUSD M5 from June 3 to August 26, 2026, 16,926 bars; gold M5 from June 16 to August 26, 13,736 bars. M15 built from the same bars.
  • Five rules on Envelopes 14, 0.10: the fade (close back inside after a close outside, trade back towards the middle); the same fade only on the EMA 200 side; the breakout (first close outside, trade in its direction); the same breakout on the EMA 200 side; and a cross of the 14-bar middle. For scale, Bollinger Bands 20, 2 with the same fade and breakout.
  • Exit and pass: stop 1.5 ATR, target 3 ATR, 48 bars at most, one trade at a time, the same exit as in the forex indicators list, ranked. Cost 1 pip on EURUSD and $0.30 an ounce on gold, from spread and swap costs in MT4. A run passes if it makes money after cost, in both halves (split July 15), and beats the 95th percentile of 200 random-entry runs with the same exit, as in algorithmic rule vs random entry.

How often does price close outside the envelope?

Bars that closed outside the band2.2%9.3%44.1%68.4%
New breaks of the band per trading day2.02.728.111.6

This is the main finding. On a 5-minute EURUSD chart the default envelope was almost twelve average bars wide, so price stayed inside it 98% of the time and broke out about twice a day. On gold the same setting was less than two average bars wide, and on M15 price spent more time outside the band than inside it. An “outside the envelope” reading on gold M15 was the normal state of the chart, not an extreme.

So the default 0.10 is a EURUSD setting that happens to be applied to everything. Anyone who copies a gold strategy built on Envelopes 14, 0.10 from a forex guide is reading a different indicator. What the deviation needs to be on each market is in Envelopes indicator settings for MT4.

On EURUSD a fixed 23-pip band can only be reached when the market is moving, so the breaks cluster in the London open and the London and New York overlap, the same hours we found busiest in session time filter tested. On gold the band is so narrow that price slips out of it at any hour, including the Asian night. A fixed band works as a crude volatility filter only where it is wide.

Does price come back after it leaves the envelope?

The “price returns to the average” idea looks right at first: 70% to 85% of breaks were followed by a touch of the middle within 12 bars. But the middle is a moving average, and it moves towards price as much as price moves towards it. Measured from the break itself, 12 bars later price was further out about half the time on three of four charts. Only on EURUSD M5, where breaks were rare, was there a real pullback, a median of a third of an ATR.

Trades in brackets. 16 of 20 runs lost after cost. The four above zero did not pass. The filtered fade on EURUSD M15 made 0.84 pips a trade in the first half and lost 0.96 in the second, on 36 trades. The filtered fade on gold M15 was barely above zero in the first half (+$0.02). The two gold M15 breakouts were in profit in both halves, and the plain one made +$1.82 and +$1.95, but 5% of random runs with the same exit did better than $2.45 a trade on that chart, so the result is within luck. 0 of 20 passed, and one run, the filtered fade on EURUSD M5, had only 20 trades.

Why did the classic envelope fade lose?

On EURUSD M5 the fade lost 1.28 pips a trade before any cost, and its win rate after cost was 27%. The reason is in the hour table: the band was only broken during the busiest hours, when price was moving hard, and fading a 23-pip move at the London open means standing in front of it. On gold the fade fired 28 times a day because the band was too narrow to mean anything, and a signal with no edge before cost loses after it. The same problem with a different band is in ATR channel bounce vs breakout, where both trades also lost on all 4 charts.

What would I do with Envelopes?

  • Do not use 0.10 on gold. Price closed outside it on 44% to 68% of bars, so “outside the envelope” said nothing. Gold needs a deviation several times larger.
  • Do not fade the first EURUSD break in the London open. Half the breaks came in four busy hours, and the fade lost 2.28 pips a trade on M5.
  • If you compare it with Bollinger Bands, compare by hour. The two bands break at very different times of day; the head-to-head is in Envelopes vs Bollinger Bands.
  • Treat the gold M15 breakout as a lead, not a system. It made money in both halves, but did not beat random entries, and it rests on 197 trades over ten weeks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Envelopes indicator in forex?

A moving average with two lines a fixed percentage above and below it. In MT4 the default is a 14-bar simple average and a deviation of 0.10, which puts each line 0.10% of price away from the average.

Is the Envelopes indicator good for forex?

Not as a signal on its own in this test. 0 of 20 runs of five Envelopes rules made money after cost, in both halves and better than random entries, on EURUSD and gold, M5 and M15.

How do you trade the Envelopes indicator?

Guides use two opposite rules: fade a close back inside the band, or follow the first close outside it. The fade lost after cost on all 4 charts here. The breakout lost on three charts and made $1.90 an ounce a trade on gold M15, which was still within the range of random entries.

Why is price always outside the envelope on gold?

Because the default 0.10% is only about $8 from line to line on gold, less than two average 5-minute bars. Price closed outside it on 44% of gold M5 bars and 68% of gold M15 bars.

Does the Envelopes indicator repaint?

No. It is a moving average of closed bars. The value on the current bar changes until the bar closes, so all signals here were taken on the closed bar.
