ATR Channel Settings for MT4: How to Build EMA Plus or Minus ATR Bands, and a 2 ATR Channel Held 76% of EURUSD M5 Closes, Not 95%

Key takeaways

  • MT4 and MT5 have no built-in ATR channel. You build it from a Moving Average and ATR, or install a Keltner-type indicator. Below are the steps and the settings, with numbers from EURUSD and gold M5 and M15.
  • A 2 ATR channel around EMA 20 held 76% of EURUSD M5 closes, not 95%. You need 3 ATR on M15 or on gold to get close to 95%.
  • On EURUSD M5 a 2 ATR band sits about 3.9 pips from the middle line; on gold M5 about $9.30.
  • Trading pullbacks to the band, 2 of 32 judged settings made money in both halves, both on gold M15. On EURUSD M5 all 11 judged settings lost.
  • The slower the middle line, the worse the channel contained price: EMA 50 at 2 ATR held only 53% to 64% of closes.

An ATR channel is one of the simplest volatility tools you can put on a chart: a moving average with two lines a fixed number of ATRs above and below it. It is also one MetaTrader does not ship. This guide shows how to put one on an MT4 or MT5 chart and which settings do what, measured on 16,926 EURUSD M5 bars and 13,736 gold M5 bars from June to August 2026.

Whether the channel works as a trading level is a separate question, answered in ATR trend channel indicator tested. The short version: the band held on paper and lost money in practice.

How do I add an ATR channel in MT4?

MetaTrader on a laptop, with a Moving Average and ATR used to draw a channel

There are three ways, from quickest to cleanest.

  • By eye, with two built-ins. Insert, Indicators, Trend, Moving Average: period 20, method Exponential, apply to Close. Then Insert, Indicators, Oscillators, Average True Range: period 14. Multiply the ATR reading by your k and measure that distance from the EMA. Fine for a quick look, tiring all day.
  • A Keltner channel indicator. Most free “Keltner Channel” files on the MQL5 Code Base are EMA plus and minus k × ATR. Check the inputs: some use a simple average, the typical price or a 10-bar ATR. Install it as in how to install an MT4 indicator; for MT5 see how to add indicators to MT5.
  • Not Envelopes. The built-in Envelopes indicator looks similar but sets the band as a fixed percent of price. 0.1% on EURUSD is about 11.6 pips whether the market is asleep or racing, so it is not a volatility channel.

Whatever you install, put an EMA 20 and an ATR(14) on the same chart for a day and check that the bands sit exactly k × ATR from the EMA. That is the channel tested here.

How wide is the channel in pips?

A trader checking how wide a 2 ATR channel is in pips
Median distance from the middle lineEURUSD M5EURUSD M15Gold M5Gold M15
ATR(14)1.96 pips3.96 pips$4.64$8.53
1.5 ATR2.9 pips5.9 pips$6.96$12.80
2 ATR3.9 pips7.9 pips$9.28$17.06
3 ATR5.9 pips11.9 pips$13.92$25.59

On EURUSD M5 a 2 ATR band is less than 4 pips from the middle line, and the whole channel is under 8 pips wide. With a 1 pip spread, a trade from one band to the middle has a quarter of its distance eaten before it starts. On M15 the same setting is twice as wide. How ATR itself changes by timeframe and by hour is in ATR indicator settings for MT4.

Which multiplier keeps price inside?

Pick the multiplier by what you want the band to mean.

  • “Price is stretched”: 2.5 to 3 ATR around EMA 20. Fewer than 1 close in 10 lands outside on M15 and gold.
  • “Normal swing”: 1.5 to 2 ATR. A quarter to a third of closes are outside on EURUSD M5.
  • Avoid EMA 50 or slower as the middle line. It lags so far that even 3 ATR left 17% to 29% of closes outside.
  • EURUSD M5 needs a wider band than gold. The same 2 ATR held 76% there and 87% on gold, because EURUSD drifts further than its small bars suggest.

Bollinger kept 87% to 89% on every chart because its width follows the spread of closes, not bar size. Its own settings are in Bollinger Bands settings for MT4.

Which settings worked for trend pullbacks?

The common way to trade an ATR trend channel: when the EMA is rising (higher than 10 bars ago), buy a touch of the lower band; when it is falling, sell a touch of the upper band. Stop 1.5 ATR, target 3 ATR, 48 bars at most, 1 pip or $0.30 cost. I ran it on 15 settings per chart.

EMA 100-0.90 (132)-0.15 (90)-0.82 (54)-0.53 (25)-1.06 (23)

Trades in brackets. Every cell lost, and the wider the band, the fewer the trades: 24 in 12 weeks at 3 ATR around EMA 20.

Only 2 of 32 judged settings made money, both on gold M15 and both in both halves: EMA 50 at 1 ATR, +$2.21 an ounce over 50 trades, and EMA 20 at 1.5 ATR, +$2.18 over 35. That is close to what chance gives across 32 tries, and their first halves had only 13 and 11 trades. On EURUSD M15 the best first-half setting went from +0.82 pips to -1.82 in the second half, 5th of 6. Picking settings from the past did not carry over, as in optimized vs default settings.

Does the timeframe or the pair change the answer?

  • M15 contains price better than M5. 82% of EURUSD closes inside a 2 ATR channel on M15, against 76% on M5.
  • Gold contains price better than EURUSD. 87% at 2 ATR on both gold timeframes.
  • Neither made the pullback pay. Gold M5 was the worst chart, -$0.84 to -$6.56 an ounce on judged settings.
  • M15 halves the trades. A 2 ATR pullback fired 105 times on EURUSD M5 and 23 times on M15 in 12 weeks.

What settings would I use?

  • EMA 20 with 2.5 ATR(14) if you want the band to mean “unusually stretched”. It held 86% to 94% of closes.
  • EMA 20 with 2 ATR on M15 or gold if you want the textbook Keltner look. Expect 13% to 18% of closes outside.
  • Do not trade the touch. 0 of 11 EURUSD M5 pullback settings made money, and the bounce lost on all four charts in ATR channel bounce vs breakout.
  • Use ATR where it did help: the stop. See fixed vs ATR stop.

Frequently asked questions

Does MT4 have an ATR channel or Keltner channel?

Not among the built-in indicators. Use a Moving Average plus ATR by eye, or install a Keltner channel indicator.

What are the default ATR channel settings?

Most Keltner-type indicators use EMA 20 and 2 × ATR(14); the original Keltner version used a 10-bar average and a 10-bar range. On EURUSD M5 that 2 ATR band sat 3.9 pips from the middle.

What multiplier keeps 95% of price inside?

About 3 ATR around EMA 20 on M15 or gold. On EURUSD M5 even 3 ATR held 91.6%.

Is Envelopes the same as an ATR channel?

No. Envelopes use a fixed percent of price, so the width does not follow volatility.

Which ATR period should I use?

I used ATR(14), the MetaTrader default. Channel width follows ATR, so a shorter ATR makes the band jumpier, not more accurate.
