Stochastic Indicator MT4 Settings for Day Trading (2026)

Key takeaways

  • I tested five Stochastic settings on the same 16,926 EURUSD 5-minute bars. The spread between the best and the worst was 2.3 percentage points, smaller than most traders expect.
  • The MT4 default of 14, 3, 3 was not the best. 14, 1, 3 and 21, 5, 5 both finished ahead of it on win rate and average pips.
  • The fast setting everyone recommends for scalping, 5, 3, 3, was the second worst: 46.1% and -0.43 pips per trade.
  • Changing the holding period moved results four times as much as changing any setting. Pick your horizon first, then the numbers.

The best Stochastic settings for MT4 on EURUSD 5-minute charts, measured over 16,926 real bars, were 14, 1, 3 and 21, 5, 5, both slightly ahead of the platform default of 14, 3, 3. The honest headline is how little any of it mattered: every setting landed between 45.0% and 47.3%, and the choice of holding period moved the result far more than the choice of parameters.

What do the three Stochastic numbers actually mean?

MetaTrader 4 window open on the Stochastic Oscillator parameters dialog

Every MT4 and MT5 Stochastic dialog asks for three values, and most guides never explain them plainly.

Field in MT4What it controlsEffect of a larger number
%K periodHow many bars the high and low range is measured overSmoother, fewer signals, later
SlowingHow much the raw %K line is averaged before you see itFewer false spikes, more lag
%D periodThe averaging on the signal line that %K crossesLater crosses, cleaner chart

So 14, 3, 3 means: measure the range over 14 bars, average the raw line over 3, and draw a 3-bar signal line on top. The oscillator then tells you where the close sits inside that 14-bar range, from 0 at the bottom to 100 at the top. That is the whole idea. It says nothing about direction, which is why the overbought test found a trend filter mattered more than anything else.

Which Stochastic settings performed best?

All five ran the same rule: enter when %K crosses back through %D inside the extreme zone, hold two hours, measure the move in pips. No stop, no target, every signal taken.

Why is 5, 3, 3 so popular if it loses?

Because it looks alive. A 5-bar range reacts to almost every candle, so the oscillator swings across the whole 0 to 100 scale several times an hour and the chart feels full of opportunity. On this data that feeling cost 0.43 pips per trade. The hours test makes the same point from a different angle: activity and edge are unrelated.

How do you change Stochastic settings in MT4 and MT5?

  1. Open the chart, then Insert, Indicators, Oscillators, Stochastic Oscillator. The same path works in MT5, and the general routine is covered in my guide to adding indicators to MT5.
  2. On the Parameters tab set %K period, Slowing and %D period. Leave the price field on Low/High unless you have a reason to change it.
  3. Set the levels on the Levels tab. 80 and 20 are the defaults. On a trending pair, 85 and 15 cuts the sample without changing the character of the signal.
  4. Right click the chart, Template, Save Template, so you are not retyping this on every new window.
  5. If the indicator will not appear at all, the install path is the usual culprit and my MT4 indicator install guide walks through it.

The setting that actually paid. None of the five. The version of this test that cleared 50% was not a different parameter set, it was the default 14, 3, 3 with a 200-period moving average filter and a four-hour hold: 52.2% and +0.77 pips. Spend your time there, not in the parameters dialog.

What settings should you use for day trading?

  • Leave it at 14, 3, 3 unless you have measured something better on your own pair. The default was mid-table here and the whole table is narrow.
  • If you want fewer, cleaner signals, use 21, 5, 5. It cut the sample by 18% against the default and finished ahead on both metrics.
  • Skip 5, 3, 3 and 9, 3, 3. They were the two worst rows and they trade the most.
  • Set your holding period on purpose. Thirty minutes and four hours are different strategies wearing the same indicator, and the four-hour version was the only one that worked.
  • Add a direction filter before you touch anything else. It is the change with the largest measured effect, as it was for Bollinger Bands and for RSI.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Stochastic setting for a 5-minute chart?

On this EURUSD dataset, 14, 1, 3 finished first at 47.3% and +0.07 pips, just ahead of 21, 5, 5. The margin over the default is thin enough that I would not switch for it alone.

Is 5, 3, 3 good for scalping?

Not on these numbers. It produced 486 signals at 46.1% and lost 0.43 pips per trade, the second worst result of the five settings tested. Its popularity comes from how responsive it looks, not from measured performance.

Should I change 80 and 20 to 85 and 15?

It reduces the number of signals and makes each one stricter, which suits a trending pair. I did not measure it separately here, so treat it as a reasonable adjustment rather than a proven improvement.

Does full Stochastic differ from slow Stochastic?

Slow Stochastic is the full version with the Slowing field fixed at 3. That is why 14, 3, 3 is the familiar default: it is the slow Stochastic every platform ships. Setting Slowing to 1 gives you the fast version, which is the 14, 1, 3 row in the table above.

Does the Stochastic repaint?

No. It is calculated from closed bars, so a value on a completed candle never changes afterwards. The current candle’s value moves until the candle closes, which is normal and is not repainting. Indicators that genuinely repaint are covered in my guide to non repaint indicators.
