CCI Settings for MT4: 0 of 30 Made Money on the EURUSD 5-Minute Chart After the Spread, and the Best Early Setting Fell to 22nd or Lower on 3 of 4 Charts

Key takeaways
- CCI comes with MetaTrader 4: Insert, Indicators, Oscillators, Commodity Channel Index. This guide shows the setup and what changing the period and the level did on EURUSD and gold, M5 and M15.
- I ran 30 settings on each chart: period 9, 14, 20, 30 or 50, level ±100, ±150 or ±200, and two rules, breakout and bounce. 120 runs, all with at least 30 trades.
- On the EURUSD 5-minute chart, 0 of 30 settings made money after a 1-pip spread. 11 of 30 were above zero before the spread. The least bad was CCI 9 with a bounce from ±200: -0.23 pips a trade.
- Gold M15 looked best, 12 of 30 in profit, but it was within chance. Random entries with the same exit reached +$2.1 to +$3.7 a trade at the 95th percentile there, and none of the 12 beat that.
- The best setting of the first half fell to 22nd, 23rd and 26th of 30 in the second half on three of four charts. Picking the period on past data did not pick the future winner.
People search for “the best CCI settings for the 5-minute chart” as if one number would fix the indicator. The test of the indicator itself is in CCI tested on forex: the default rules did not pass. This page is the practical part: how to set CCI up in MT4, and whether any period or level changed that.
How do I add CCI to a chart in MT4?

- Open the chart, then Insert, Indicators, Oscillators, Commodity Channel Index. It also sits in the Navigator under Indicators, Oscillators.
- Parameters tab: Period 14 is the MT4 default. Apply to: Typical Price (HLC/3), which is how Lambert defined it. Every number on this page uses the typical price.
- Levels tab: MT4 adds +100 and -100. Add +200 and -200 with the Add button if you want the rarer extreme, and 0 for the centre line.
- Press OK. The CCI opens in its own window under the price. MT5 has the same indicator in the same place, under Oscillators.
CCI has no ceiling, so the window rescales on sharp candles. If you prefer a fixed view, in the Scale tab set a fixed minimum of -300 and maximum of +300: fewer than 1% of CCI 20 readings went past ±300 on these charts.
What do the period and the level change?

| Setting | What it does | What it did here |
|---|---|---|
| Shorter period, 9 | Reacts faster, more crosses | Most trades on every chart; on EURUSD M5 1,340 bounce trades at ±100 |
| Longer period, 50 | Slower, fewer crosses | Still only 58% of bars inside ±100, the same as period 14 |
| Level ±100 | The textbook overbought and oversold line | Crossed about 31 times a trading day on EURUSD M5 |
| Level ±200 | A rare extreme | About 6% of bars beyond it; a third as many trades as ±100 |
The period did less than people expect. The share of bars inside ±100 was 57.9% to 60.3% for periods 14, 20 and 50 on all four charts. A longer period does not make the levels rarer. Only a wider level does that.
How was it tested?
- Data: EURUSD M5, 16,926 bars from June 3 to August 26, 2026; gold M5, 13,736 bars from June 16; M15 built from the same bars.
- Breakout rule: CCI crosses above the upper level, buy; below the lower level, sell.
- Bounce rule: CCI comes back down through the upper level, sell; back up through the lower level, buy.
- Exit: stop 1.5 ATR, target 3 ATR, 48 bars, one trade at a time. Cost 1 pip on EURUSD and $0.30 an ounce on gold, as in spread and swap costs in MT4.
- Halves: before and after July 15, 2026, to see whether a setting that won early kept winning.
Which CCI settings made money?
| 30 settings per chart | EURUSD M5 | EURUSD M15 | Gold M5 | Gold M15 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Above zero before cost | 11 | 10 | 5 | 15 |
| Made money after cost | 0 | 1 | 1 | 12 |
| Made money in both halves | 0 | 1 | 0 | 4 |
| Best setting | CCI 9, ±200, bounce | CCI 50, ±150, breakout | CCI 9, ±200, bounce | CCI 20, ±200, breakout |
| Its profit per trade | -0.23 (368) | +0.05 (148) | +0.25 (267) | +2.35 (105) |
| Default, CCI 14 ±100 bounce | -1.12 (1,225) | -1.30 (337) | -0.44 (754) | +0.19 (238) |
Pips on EURUSD, dollars an ounce on gold, trades in brackets.
On EURUSD the spread decided everything. Eleven settings on M5 had an edge before cost, the best +0.77 pips a trade, and every one of them lost after a 1-pip spread. The one EURUSD M15 setting that made money in both halves earned 0.05 pips a trade, which is nothing.
Gold M15 had 12 settings in profit and 4 positive in both halves, including CCI 20 with a ±200 breakout at +$2.35 a trade. But gold M15 is the noisiest chart in the test: random entries with the same stop and target and the same number of trades reached +$2.1 to +$3.7 a trade at the 95th percentile. 0 of the 12 profitable gold M15 settings beat their own random range.
Is the bounce or the breakout better?
On EURUSD M5 the bounce lost less than the breakout in 13 of 15 period and level pairs, and at ±150 and ±200 in all ten. At ±200 the bounce lost 0.23 to 0.99 pips a trade, the breakout 1.36 to 1.93. That matches the first test: on EURUSD a cross out of the band was more often a turning point than a launch.
On gold M15 it was the other way. The breakout at ±200 made money for periods 9, 14 and 20, and the bounce at ±200 lost on all five periods, as much as $3.68 a trade. One rule cannot be “right” on both pairs, which is a sign of noise rather than of a setting that works.
Does the best setting stay the best?
| Best setting before July 15 | First half | Second half | Rank after, of 30 |
|---|---|---|---|
| EURUSD M5: CCI 9, ±200, bounce | -0.49 | +0.06 | 1 |
| EURUSD M15: CCI 30, ±200, bounce | +1.44 | -1.67 | 26 |
| Gold M5: CCI 9, ±200, bounce | +1.92 | -0.75 | 22 |
| Gold M15: CCI 30, ±150, breakout | +4.77 | -1.36 | 23 |
On three charts the winner of the first half lost money in the second and dropped to the bottom third. The only one that stayed on top, on EURUSD M5, was a loser in both halves that simply lost least. This is the usual pattern with tuned settings, shown in more detail in optimized vs default settings.
What CCI settings would I use on MT4?
- Keep the default period. 14 or 20 is fine. The best period was 9, 50, 9 and 20 on the four charts, and the period barely changed how often CCI left its band.
- Use ±200 if you want “extreme” to mean extreme. At ±100 CCI is outside the band 40% of the time.
- On EURUSD, do not trade the ±100 breakout. It lost on every period on both timeframes.
- Do not choose a setting from one stretch of history. The best early setting was among the worst later on three of four charts. The same check for other oscillators is in Williams %R settings for MT4 and Stochastic settings for MT4.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best CCI setting for the 5-minute chart?
None made money on EURUSD M5 after a 1-pip spread: 0 of 30 settings. The least bad was CCI 9 with a bounce from ±200, at -0.23 pips a trade.
What is the default CCI setting in MT4?
Period 14, with levels at +100 and -100. Set “Apply to” to Typical Price to match the original formula.
Should I use CCI 14 or CCI 20?
It made little difference here. Both stayed inside ±100 on 58% to 60% of bars, and neither was the best setting on more than one chart.
Is CCI better for scalping or day trading?
Neither passed in this test. On M15 there were fewer trades and the spread hurt less, but results swung between the two halves of the data.
