Buy/Sell Signal Indicators Tested: Fractal Arrows, ZigZag, EMA Arrows and RSI+Stochastic on 16,926 Bars (2026)

Key takeaways

  • I coded the four arrow logics that free buy/sell signal indicators actually use and ran them over 16,926 EURUSD 5-minute bars. At a two hour hold the best made +0.08 pips per trade and the worst lost 0.32. After a one pip spread all four were negative: -0.92, -1.30, -1.31 and -1.32.
  • Win rates ran from 43.8% to 46.7%. Not one arrow got near the 70 to 80% its sales page promises.
  • The same ZigZag arrow scores 88.2% wins and +10.42 pips when you count it where it sits in history, because 85.5% of its arrows were erased before the history was drawn.
  • The only arrow that paid was the opposite of how arrows are sold: a slow 25-pip ZigZag reversal held four hours made +4.04 pips at 55.7%. Arrows are marketed for scalping, and scalping is where they died.

Buy/sell signal indicators all draw the same thing, an arrow under a candle, and they all come from one of four calculations underneath. Instead of listing product names, I rebuilt those four logics and measured them on the same EURUSD M5 data, June 3 to August 26, 2026, taking each arrow only when a live trader could have seen it. What a signal indicator is and how the arrow gets there is covered in buy sell signal indicator explained; this page is what the arrows are worth.

What do the four arrow types score when taken live?

Arrow logic, 2-hour holdRepaints?SignalsWin rateAvg pipsAfter 1 pip spread
Fractal reversal arrowYes51744.5%-0.32-1.32
ZigZag 15-pip reversal arrowYes18246.7%+0.08-0.92
EMA 5/20 crossover arrowNo42344.4%-0.31-1.31
RSI + Stochastic confluence arrowNo37243.8%-0.30-1.30

All four sit inside a one pip band around zero, which is the range a coin flip plus noise produces. A typical spread kills every one of them; what your broker actually charges, and why it matters more than the arrow, is in spread and swap costs on MT4. The EMA arrow is the same signal as the fast crossover pairs that lost in the moving average crossover test, only drawn as a triangle instead of two lines.

Why does the same arrow look brilliant in history?

Because two of the four logics erase arrows after they are drawn. The ZigZag waits for price to move a threshold before it commits to a swing point, and until then it keeps moving the arrow. Your history chart shows only the arrows that survived.

ZigZag thresholdArrows keptArrows erasedShare erasedEntry lag
8 pips7852,48376.0%7.56 pips
15 pips2511,48385.5%14.29 pips
25 pips9392790.9%24.96 pips

Scored as drawn in history, the 15-pip ZigZag arrow wins 88.2% at +10.42 pips per trade. Scored when it actually appeared, 46.7% and +0.08. A 41.5 point gap produced by nothing but timing. Fractal arrows arrive 2.8 pips after the bar they are drawn on and show a smaller version of the same split: 56.9% in hindsight, 44.5% live. The non-repainting EMA arrow scored 44.4% both ways, because there is nothing to shift; that identical pair of numbers is the practical repaint test, and non-repaint arrow indicators shows how to run it on any indicator in a few minutes.

Does confirmation from two oscillators help?

It changes the trade count, not the quality. The RSI plus Stochastic confluence arrow fired 372 times and scored 43.8%, in the same band as the others. Across 1,997 individual signals in a separate run, the two oscillators agreed on the same bar only 149 times, and where one was silent the other traded alone, per Stochastic vs RSI. What did move the Stochastic was a trend filter: a 200-period moving average took its average from -0.23 to +0.92 pips in the Stochastic overbought test. A filter on direction helps; a second oscillator mostly buys silence.

Is there any arrow that made money?

One, and only when held far longer than any arrow product suggests.

Arrow, live, 4-hour holdSignalsWin rateAvg pips
Fractal reversal29951.2%+1.80
ZigZag 15-pip reversal14752.4%+1.85
ZigZag 25-pip reversal7955.7%+4.04
EMA 5/20 crossover26147.9%-0.36

The slowest arrow on the longest hold was the only one with a clear edge, and 79 trades is enough to trust the sign but not the decimals. At 30 minutes, the hold arrow products are built for, every row was negative. The pattern matches the price-action equivalents: a 3-bar reversal or a swing marked by a market structure oscillator pays when you give the reversal room, not when you scalp it.

How should you use a buy/sell indicator, then?

As a marker of where a reversal might be, never as a trigger by itself. Take only arrows in the direction of a slow trend gate, hold them for hours rather than minutes, trade the hours that move, which on EURUSD are 8 to 11 am New York per the best hours to trade EURUSD, and before anything else run the repaint test. My DeMARK trend line is the tool I give away because its line scores the same in history as it did live, which none of the ZigZag arrows can say.

FAQ

What is the most accurate buy sell signal indicator?

Measured live, none of the four logics cleared 47% on a two hour hold. The 25-pip ZigZag reversal reached 55.7% on a four hour hold across 79 trades. Any claim of 70 to 90% accuracy is a history chart with the erased arrows missing.

How can I tell if my arrow indicator repaints?

Open the indicator on a live chart, screenshot the last 50 arrows, come back a day later and compare. If arrows moved or vanished, it repaints. A non-repainting arrow scores the same win rate in history and live.

Do non-repainting arrows make money?

Not automatically. The EMA 5/20 arrow never repaints and still lost 0.31 pips per trade before spread. Non-repainting is the minimum requirement for a test to be honest, not a source of edge.

What data did you use?

EURUSD M5, 16,926 bars, June 3 to August 26, 2026, from a live MetaTrader terminal. Each arrow was scored when it first appeared and again where it sat in final history, at 30-minute to 4-hour holds, with no stop or target.

  1. Solid checklist at the end. The point about explaining the logic in one sentence is so true, if i cant say why the arrow showed up i shouldnt take it.

  2. what timeframe would you recommend for someone who can only check charts in the evening? i cant sit at the screen all day so the M15 thing might not work for me

  3. The repaint section finally made it click for me. I always wondered why my backtests looked perfect but live was a mess. Going to run the timeframe switch test tonight.

  4. Does the DeMARK Trend Line work on MT5 too or is it MT4 only? want to make sure before i install

  5. good article but i actually prefer using just one timeframe. stacking H1 and M15 feels like overthinking it for me, though i get why others like the confluence

  6. downloaded the demark trend line, installs fine on mt4. using it as my which way filter now and skipping arrows that go against it. cleaner already

  7. quick question, when you say take signals on M15 with an H1 trend filter, do you mean i need two charts open at once or can one indicator handle both?

  8. Is close-based the same as the indicator only updating when the candle closes? sorry if thats a dumb question, still learning the terms

    1. yes exactly, close based means it waits for the candle to fully close before locking the signal. thats what stops it from repainting mid candle. not a dumb question at all

  9. bookmarked this. the part about pairing every entry with an exit plan is something i always forget. need to add a trailing stop to my routine

  10. can someone explain the ATR multiplier part again? i set mine to 3 like suggested but not sure what changing it really does to the arrows

    1. @persona the ATR multiplier basically controls how far price has to move before it counts. higher number = fewer but bigger trend signals, lower = more arrows but more noise. start at 3 and only change after watching a bunch of signals.

  11. question about the combine signals section, you say dont stack three moving averages. would a moving average plus the MACD divergence count as two independent layers or is that still too similar?

    1. a moving average measures trend and MACD divergence measures momentum/reversal so yeah those are genuinely different layers. thats a good combo actually

  12. tested the reload trick on an old arrow indicator i had and yep, three arrows just vanished. wish i read this a year ago. thank you for explaining the test so clearly

  13. not sure i fully agree that taking every arrow is always bad. on a strong trending day i found the counter trend ones still worked sometimes. but for sideways markets yeah you nailed it
