ATR Indicator Settings for MT4: 1.96 Pips on M5, 9.16 on H1, and the Same ATR Channel Fade Went From 0 of 27 to 21 of 23

Key takeaways
- I measured the ATR indicator on EURUSD across the four standard MT4 charts from M5 to H1, with periods 7, 14 and 20, and traded an ATR channel (Keltner) breakout on each: three multipliers, three exits, both directions, 1 pip of cost.
- The period barely matters. The median ATR on M5 was 1.93 pips with period 7, 1.96 with 14 and 1.97 with 20. The timeframe changes it five times over: 1.96 pips on M5, 3.95 on M15, 6.07 on M30, 9.16 on H1.
- On M5 the 1-pip spread is half an ATR. On H1 it is a ninth. That one ratio explains most of what follows.
- Fading the ATR channel went from 0 of 27 profitable setups on M5 to 21 of 23 on H1. Following it lost after costs in 74 of 77 setups on M15 to H1, and in all 27 on M5.
- On gold the direction flipped: following the channel for 24 bars made money on M5 at all three multipliers, and fading it lost at all three. One ATR setting does not travel between symbols.
ATR is one of the few indicators every MetaTrader 4 terminal ships with and almost nobody changes. Most guides stop at “set the period to 14” and move on to stop losses. The more useful question is what the number means on your chart, and what it does to a strategy built on it. I checked both on the same EURUSD data as my ATR breakout test.
How do I add ATR in MT4?

- Open a chart. If the platform is new to you, my MT4 first chart setup covers the basics.
- Go to Insert → Indicators → Oscillators → Average True Range.
- Leave Period at 14. The results below show why changing it is not worth your time.
- ATR opens in its own window under the chart. The value is in price, not pips: on a 5-digit EURUSD quote, 0.00020 means 2.0 pips.
- Press Ctrl+D to open the Data Window. Hover over any bar and the ATR value for that bar appears there, which is easier than reading the line.
MT4 has no built-in Keltner Channel. If you download one, check its inputs before you use it: the modern version is an EMA with bands at a multiple of ATR, but some versions follow Chester Keltner’s original — a 10-bar average of the typical price with bands at the average high-low range. They are different indicators under the same name.
What is a normal ATR on each timeframe?

| EURUSD chart | Bars tested | ATR 7 | ATR 14 | ATR 20 | 1-pip spread as share of ATR 14 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| M5 | 16,926 | 1.93 | 1.96 | 1.97 | 51% |
| M15 | 5,642 | 3.83 | 3.95 | 4.01 | 25% |
| M30 | 2,821 | 5.89 | 6.07 | 6.12 | 16% |
| H1 | 1,410 | 8.97 | 9.16 | 9.29 | 11% |
Median ATR in pips, June 3 to August 26, 2026. Higher charts built from the same M5 bars.
Two things to take from this table. First, the period changes the median ATR by 2 to 5%. A shorter period makes the line jumpier, not larger. Second, the timeframe changes everything. ATR grows much more slowly than the bar length: three times the bar length gave twice the ATR, twelve times gave 4.7 times.
On M5 the ATR 14 stayed between 1.26 and 3.22 pips on 80% of bars. The median 5-minute bar was about 1.3 pips from high to low for most of the day and about 2.6 pips from 12:00 to 15:59 UTC, when London and New York overlap, and in the 21:00 UTC rollover hour. So one ATR 14 reading averages across very different hours. If you set a stop at 2×ATR in the quiet hours, you get a stop of well under 3 pips.
What does the timeframe do to an ATR strategy?
I took the ATR channel — a 20-period EMA with bands at 1.5, 2 and 2.5 ATR — and traded the first close outside it on each chart, both with the break and against it. Exits: an ATR stop and target of 1:1 or 1:2, or a close after 24 bars (2 hours on M5, 24 hours on H1). Only setups with at least 30 trades count.
| Chart | Follow: profitable after cost | Follow: median net | Fade: profitable after cost | Fade: profitable in both halves | Fade: median net |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| M5 | 0 of 27 | -1.17 | 0 of 27 | 0 | -0.68 |
| M15 | 2 of 27 | -1.72 | 8 of 27 | 5 | -0.32 |
| M30 | 1 of 27 | -2.25 | 13 of 27 | 8 | -0.10 |
| H1 | 0 of 23 | -2.68 | 21 of 23 | 11 | +0.89 |
Pips per trade after 1 pip of cost. H1 has 23 setups because 4 had fewer than 30 trades.
The follow side got worse in pips as the chart grew, because the losses grew with the ATR. The fade side went the other way. Its edge before costs grew from a median +0.32 pips on M5 to +1.89 on H1, while the spread stayed 1 pip. That is the spread ratio from the first table showing up in the results.
Here is the default ATR 14 channel at 2×ATR on each chart, faded with a 1:2 ATR exit:
| Fade Keltner 20 / 2×ATR 14, stop 1 ATR, target 2 ATR | Trades | Win rate | Gross | Net | 1st half | 2nd half |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| M5 | 921 | 41.3% | +0.40 | -0.60 | -0.52 | -0.69 |
| M15 | 233 | 39.9% | +0.93 | -0.07 | +0.52 | -0.75 |
| M30 | 113 | 43.4% | +2.22 | +1.22 | +1.56 | +0.82 |
| H1 | 49 | 42.9% | +3.06 | +2.06 | +1.92 | +2.26 |
Same rule, same settings, same months. It lost on M5 and made money in both halves on M30 and H1. The honest caveat is the sample: 113 trades on M30 and 49 on H1 over 12 weeks. That is enough to say the M5 result is not the whole story, and not enough to trade the H1 version without a forward test. The ATR channel vs Bollinger Bands comparison has the M5 detail for other channels.
Does the same ATR setting work on gold?
No, and not in the way you might expect. On XAUUSD M5 (13,736 bars) the median ATR 14 was $4.62, so a $0.30 cost was only 6.5% of an ATR — gold on M5 costs less, relative to its movement, than EURUSD on H1. But the direction flipped:
| Gold M5, Keltner 20, exit after 24 bars | Trades | Follow: net | Follow: halves | Fade: net |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5×ATR | 353 | +$0.43 | +0.25 / +0.53 | -$1.03 |
| 2×ATR | 269 | +$0.58 | -0.86 / +1.33 | -$1.18 |
| 2.5×ATR | 178 | +$1.04 | -1.81 / +2.52 | -$1.64 |
Dollars per ounce per trade after $0.30 of cost.
On EURUSD M5 the break was the thing to fade. On gold M5 it was the thing to follow, and only the 1.5×ATR version held up in both halves. It is the same lesson as my gold vs EURUSD test: one rule on two symbols is two different strategies.
How should I use ATR for stops and position size?
- Read the ATR in pips before you set a multiple. 2×ATR is about 4 pips on EURUSD M5 and about 18 on H1. My fixed vs ATR stop test found a 4-pip-class ATR stop on M5 lost to a fixed 15-pip stop.
- Size from the stop, not the other way round. Once ATR gives you a stop in pips, the lot size follows from your risk per trade — my position sizing table does the arithmetic.
- Check the spread-to-ATR ratio for your chart. Above about a quarter, any ATR-sized target is mostly cost.
- Remember ATR is inside other indicators. Supertrend is an ATR band with a flip rule; my Supertrend settings test shows the same M5 problem from a different angle.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best ATR setting for MT4?
The default period 14 is fine. On EURUSD the median ATR changed by only 2 to 5% between periods 7, 14 and 20. The timeframe matters far more: ATR 14 was 1.96 pips on M5 and 9.16 on H1.
What is a normal ATR for EURUSD?
From June to August 2026, the median ATR 14 was 1.96 pips on M5, 3.95 on M15, 6.07 on M30 and 9.16 on H1.
Where is ATR in MT4?
Insert → Indicators → Oscillators → Average True Range. It opens in a separate window, and the value is in price: 0.00020 on EURUSD means 2 pips.
Is there a Keltner Channel in MT4?
Not built in. Downloadable versions differ: the modern one uses an EMA with ATR bands, the original uses a 10-bar average of the typical price with average-range bands. Check the inputs.
Which timeframe is best for an ATR strategy?
In this test, the higher the better for EURUSD. Fading an ATR channel break was profitable after costs in 0 of 27 setups on M5 and 21 of 23 on H1, because the 1-pip spread fell from half an ATR to a ninth.
