RSI Swing Trading Setup for MT4: RSI 7 at 30/70 on H1 Stayed Positive at Every Hold and in Both Halves, and Gold Did Not Follow

Key takeaways
- This guide sets up RSI for swing trading in MT4 and MT5 and shows what each setting did on 1,417 EURUSD H1 bars and 1,146 gold H1 bars, built from 5-minute data from June to August 2026.
- RSI 7 with 30/70 levels on H1 was the steadiest setting: 113 trades, positive after a 1-pip cost at a 3, 6 and 12-hour hold, and positive in both halves of the data every time.
- The MT4 default, RSI 14 at 30/70, made +4.98 pips per trade held 6 hours, but on 32 trades in 12 weeks, fewer than 3 a week.
- Do not copy the setup to gold. The same RSI 7 at 30/70 on gold H1 lost $1.56 per trade held 6 hours and $4.27 held 12 hours.
- Do not replace the H1 chart with a long RSI on M5: RSI 168 on M5 never reached 30 or 70 in 12 weeks.
If you want to use RSI for swing trades, the platform part is simple and the settings part is where people go wrong. This guide covers both: where to click in MT4 and MT5, and which period, levels and holding time held up when I tested them on EURUSD and gold.
The full test, with M5, M15 and H4 alongside H1, is in RSI settings for swing trading tested. Why the same RSI loses as a scalp is in swing RSI vs scalping RSI.
How do you set up RSI for swing trading in MT4?

- Switch the chart to H1. Click H1 on the Timeframes toolbar, or right-click the chart → Timeframes → H1.
- Add RSI: Insert → Indicators → Oscillators → Relative Strength Index.
- Parameters tab: set the period (7 is my pick below, 14 is the default) and Apply to: Close.
- Levels tab: MT4 already has 30 and 70. Leave them. Remove any 50 line you added for trend reading; it did not help as an entry.
- Save it: right-click → Template → Save Template, name it “RSI swing H1”, so you can load it on any pair.
In MT5 the menu is the same: Insert → Indicators → Oscillators → Relative Strength Index. MT5 also has H2 and H3 charts that MT4 does not, which I did not test here. The platform differences are in my MT4 vs MT5 comparison.
What is the signal, exactly?

- Buy when an H1 candle closes with RSI back above 30 after being below it.
- Sell when an H1 candle closes with RSI back below 70 after being above it.
- Enter at that candle’s close, not when RSI first touches the level during the hour. Inside an unfinished H1 candle, RSI moves with every tick.
- Exit after a fixed number of hours. I tested 3, 6 and 12.
Which RSI settings worked best on EURUSD H1?
| EURUSD H1, hold 6 hours | Trades in 12 weeks | After 1 pip | Won | 1st half | 2nd half |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RSI 7, 30/70 | 113 | +3.02 | 54.9% | +1.38 | +4.58 |
| RSI 9, 30/70 | 72 | +0.94 | 54.2% | -0.60 | +2.56 |
| RSI 14, 30/70 (MT4 default) | 32 | +4.98 | 59.4% | +6.63 | +3.10 |
| RSI 21, 30/70 | 19 | -3.14 | 47.4% | -0.41 | -5.59 |

EURUSD, June 3 to August 26, 2026, H1 bars built from 16,926 M5 bars. Pips per trade after 1 pip of cost, split at July 15.
I picked RSI 7 over the default 14 for one reason: numbers of trades. RSI 14 made more per trade, but 32 trades is a sample where a coin can produce +4.53 pips a trade one time in twenty. RSI 7 had 113 trades and a coin with that many trades reached +2.10 in its best 5% of runs. RSI 21 at 30/70 was too slow for 12 weeks of data: 19 signals and a loss.
How long should you hold an H1 RSI trade?
| EURUSD H1, 30/70 | Hold 3 hours | Hold 6 hours | Hold 12 hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| RSI 7, all trades | +1.80 | +3.02 | +2.40 |
| RSI 7, 1st half | +2.09 | +1.38 | +0.90 |
| RSI 7, 2nd half | +1.52 | +4.58 | +3.85 |
| RSI 14, all trades | +5.72 | +4.98 | +6.33 |
| RSI 14, 1st half | +9.26 | +6.63 | +5.48 |
| RSI 14, 2nd half | +1.71 | +3.10 | +7.30 |
Pips per trade after 1 pip of cost. RSI 7: 112 to 113 trades per column; RSI 14: 32.
6 hours was the best hold for RSI 7, and every cell for both settings stayed positive. That consistency is what I look for, more than the top number. A setting that only works at one exact hold usually found noise, as in my optimized vs default settings test.
Does the same RSI setup work on gold?
| Gold H1, $0.30 cost | Trades | Hold 3 hours | Hold 6 hours | Hold 12 hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RSI 7, 30/70 | 85 | +$1.22 | -$1.56 | -$4.27 |
| RSI 14, 30/70 | 42 | +$3.89 | +$1.85 | +$2.60 |
| RSI 14, 40/60 | 89 | — | -$1.49 | — |
| RSI 14, cross of 50 | 131 | — | -$0.29 | — |
Gold (XAUUSD), June 16 to August 26, 2026: 1,146 H1 bars from 13,736 M5 bars. Dollars per trade after cost.
No. RSI 7, the best EURUSD setting, lost on gold at 6 and 12 hours. RSI 14 at 30/70 was positive overall, but +$7.57 per trade in the first half and -$2.03 in the second at a 6-hour hold, on 42 trades. A coin on the same gold bars reached +$7.53 in its best 5% of runs. On gold I would not use either. My gold MT4 settings test and gold vs EURUSD with one rule found the same split.
Can I see H1 RSI on my M5 chart?
Not by changing the period. The common tip is RSI 168 on M5, since 14 × 12 = 168. On 12 weeks of EURUSD it moved with H1 RSI 14 (correlation 0.984), but it stayed between 33.6 and 66.0 the whole time. Levels 30 and 70 never triggered. If you want the hourly RSI on a lower chart, use a multi-timeframe RSI indicator that reads H1 bars, and act only at the H1 close.
What RSI swing mistakes should you avoid in MT4?
- Trading RSI 30/70 on M5 and calling it swing trading. On M5 all 45 RSI settings I tested lost after a 1-pip cost.
- Tightening the levels to get more trades. 40/60 on RSI 14 gave four times the trades and a quarter of the profit per trade compared with 30/70.
- Widening to 20/80 on H1. RSI 14 at 20/80 fired 9 times in 12 weeks.
- Trusting an H4 backtest from a few months of data. RSI 14 at 30/70 on H4 fired 10 times in the same 12 weeks.
- Forgetting the spread and swap. A 6 or 12-hour hold can cross the rollover. Check your broker’s numbers in my spread and swap guide.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best RSI settings for swing trading in MT4?
On EURUSD H1 in my test: RSI 7 with 30/70 levels, entering at the H1 close and exiting after 6 hours. It made +3.02 pips per trade over 113 trades after a 1-pip cost, positive in both halves of the data.
Should I use RSI 14 or RSI 7 on the 1-hour chart?
RSI 14 made more per trade (+4.98 pips) but gave only 32 trades in 12 weeks. RSI 7 gave 113 trades and stayed positive at every hold I tested, which makes it the safer choice on this data.
What timeframe is best for RSI swing trading?
H1 on EURUSD: 26 of 36 RSI settings were positive after cost, against 0 of 45 on M5. H4 gave too few signals to judge in 12 weeks.
Does RSI swing trading work on gold?
Not in this test. RSI 7 at 30/70 lost $1.56 per trade on gold H1 with a 6-hour hold, and RSI 14 was positive in one half of the data and negative in the other.
How do I add RSI levels in MT4?
Open the RSI properties, go to the Levels tab, and add or edit the values. 30 and 70 are there by default; click Add to put in another level, such as 50.
