Momentum Indicator Tested: EURUSD Never Reached 101 or 99 in 16,926 Bars, and the 100 Cross Paid on Only 1 of 4 Charts

Key takeaways

  • The Momentum indicator in MetaTrader divides today’s close by the close 14 bars ago and multiplies by 100. I tested its four common rules on EURUSD and gold, M5 and M15: 16,926 EURUSD bars and 13,736 gold bars.
  • On EURUSD, Momentum 14 never reached 101 or 99. The highest reading in 16,926 five-minute bars was 100.54, and 98% of bars sat between 99.83 and 100.23. Levels copied from stock charts never fire on a currency pair.
  • Momentum crossed the 100 line 39 times a trading day on EURUSD M5, and 64% to 67% of those crosses went back the other way within 6 bars.
  • Only 1 of 16 Momentum runs passed all three checks: the default 100 cross on gold M5, +$0.38 an ounce a trade. The same rule lost on the other 3 charts.
  • The fade from a 50-bar Momentum extreme was the only rule in profit before cost on EURUSD M5, +0.13 pips a trade, and the 1-pip spread turned it into -0.87.

Momentum is one of the oldest indicators in technical analysis and one of the simplest. It ships with MetaTrader 4 and 5 under Indicators, Oscillators, and it draws a single line around 100: above 100 the price is higher than it was 14 bars ago, below 100 it is lower.

Guides teach four ways to trade it: buy when the line crosses above 100, the same only in the direction of the trend, buy when Momentum crosses above its own moving average, and sell when it turns down from an extreme. Each one is a rule, so each one can be counted on real bars with a fixed exit.

What does the Momentum indicator measure?

A price chart with a momentum line under it
PartHow it is calculated
MomentumClose / Close 14 bars ago × 100
Centre line100: the price is exactly where it was 14 bars ago
Rate of change (ROC)Momentum minus 100, the same line shifted to a zero centre
Settings in MT4Period (14) and the price to apply it to (Close)

That makes the 100 cross a plain price rule: it fires on the bar when the close moves above or below the close of 14 bars ago. Nothing is smoothed, so every jump of a single candle 14 bars back shows up in the line too.

How was it tested?

A trader checking a Momentum indicator signal on a chart
  • Data: EURUSD M5 from June 3 to August 26, 2026, 16,926 bars; gold M5 from June 16 to August 26, 13,736 bars. M15 built from the same bars.
  • Four rules: Momentum 14 crosses 100; the same cross only on the EMA 200 side; Momentum crosses its own 9-bar simple average; and the fade (Momentum makes a 50-bar high above 100, then the next bar is lower: sell, and the mirror for buying). For scale, RSI 14 crossing 50 and RSI returning from 70 or 30, on the same exit.
  • Exit and pass: stop 1.5 ATR, target 3 ATR, 48 bars at most, one trade at a time, the same exit as in the forex indicators list, ranked. Cost 1 pip on EURUSD and $0.30 an ounce on gold, from spread and swap costs in MT4. A run passes if it makes money after cost, in both halves (split July 15), and beats the 95th percentile of 200 random-entry runs with the same exit, as in algorithmic rule vs random entry.

Where does Momentum actually move on EURUSD and gold?

Bars above 10043.8%45.9%48.6%49.4%

This is the first surprise. On EURUSD a 14-bar move of 1% almost never happens on a 5- or 15-minute chart, so the Momentum line lives in a band about 0.4 wide around 100. Any fixed overbought level of 101 and 99 would have fired 0 times in three months on both EURUSD charts. On gold, which moves several times more in percent, the same levels fired on 1.7% to 7.1% of bars. A Momentum level only means something for the symbol and timeframe it was measured on, and most traders who copy one have never checked.

How noisy is the 100 cross?

Momentum 14 crossing 100EURUSD M5EURUSD M15Gold M5Gold M15
Crosses per trading day39.012.533.710.8
Crossed back within 6 bars66.8%65.2%65.3%64.2%
RSI 14 crossing 50, crossed back within 6 bars66.9%67.1%67.2%67.1%

Two out of three 100 crosses were undone within half an hour on M5. That is far more whipsaw than the Awesome Oscillator, where 23% to 30% of zero crosses came back within 6 bars, because Momentum has no averaging at all. RSI crossing 50 was just as jumpy. How Momentum and RSI compare signal for signal is in Momentum vs RSI.

Which Momentum rule made money?

Pips on EURUSD, dollars an ounce on gold, trades in brackets. The random rows match the 100-cross rule’s trade count; every run was checked against its own random range.

Two of sixteen runs made money after cost. Only one passed every check: the plain 100 cross on gold M5, +$0.38 a trade, +$0.48 in the first half and +$0.32 in the second, with 37.8% winners and a profit factor of 1.08. Its random range topped out at +$0.19, so it was not luck in the usual sense. But it is 1 test of 16, it lost on the other three charts, and the next page shows that periods 10 and 20 next to it lost on the same chart.

The trend filter did not help. On gold M5 it took the one passing rule and turned it into -$0.81 a trade, and on EURUSD it changed -1.35 into -1.31. The 9-bar average cross on gold M15 made +$0.29, but -$0.50 in the second half, far inside a random range that reached +$2.79.

Why did the extreme fade come closest on EURUSD?

It traded less and against the move. A 50-bar Momentum high means price just ran farther in 14 bars than at any time in the last 4 hours; on EURUSD M5 that kind of run was more often followed by a pause than by more of the same. Before cost the fade made +0.13 pips a trade there and +0.34 on M15, the only Momentum rule on EURUSD that was positive before the spread. After a 1-pip spread both lost. The same pattern showed up for RSI in RSI trend vs overbought and oversold: fading extremes loses less than following crosses on fast EURUSD charts, but still loses.

What would I do with the Momentum indicator?

  • Never use fixed levels like 101 and 99 on EURUSD. They were not reached once in 16,926 M5 bars or on M15. If you want an extreme, measure it on your own chart, as the 50-bar high here does.
  • Do not trade the 100 cross alone on EURUSD. Two of three crosses reversed within 6 bars, and it lost on both timeframes, as the MACD zero cross did in MACD zero-line and trend filter tested.
  • Read the gold M5 pass as a lead, not a strategy. It was 1 of 16 runs, and the speeds next to 14 lost. Every period from 3 to 89 is in Momentum indicator settings for MT4.
  • If you already use RSI, Momentum adds little. The two lines moved together at 0.79 to 0.85 and sat on the same side of the middle 84% of the time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Momentum indicator in forex?

A line that compares the current close with the close a set number of bars ago: Close / Close 14 bars ago × 100 in MetaTrader. Above 100 the price is higher than 14 bars ago, below 100 it is lower.

Is the Momentum indicator good for forex?

Not as a signal on its own in this test. 1 of 16 runs of four Momentum rules made money after cost, in both halves and better than random entries, and all four rules lost on EURUSD M5 and M15.

What are overbought and oversold levels for Momentum?

There are no fixed ones. On EURUSD M5 and M15, Momentum 14 never reached 101 or 99; 98% of M5 bars sat between 99.83 and 100.23. On gold M15 the same levels were hit on 7.1% of bars. Levels must be measured per symbol and timeframe.

What does a Momentum cross above 100 mean?

Only that the close is now higher than the close 14 bars ago. On EURUSD M5 it happened 39 times a trading day, and two of three crosses reversed within 6 bars.

Is Momentum the same as rate of change?

Yes, in shape. Rate of change in percent is Momentum minus 100, so both lines cross their centre on the same bar and give the same signals.
