Liquidity Sweep Settings for MT4: How to Mark Swing Levels With Fractals, and Only 1 of 57 Fade Settings Made Money in Both Halves

Key takeaways
- MT4 has no “liquidity sweep” indicator, but it has everything you need: Fractals to mark swing highs and lows, a horizontal line for the level, and a price alert. This guide shows the setup and the two settings that matter: how big a swing counts, and how deep the wick must go.
- I ran 24 fade settings on each of four charts, EURUSD and gold, M5 and M15: 96 runs, 57 of them with at least 30 trades.
- Only 1 of 57 made money in both halves: 5-bar swings with a wick of at least 0.5 ATR on EURUSD M15, on 31 trades. 8 of 57 made money overall.
- Bigger swings were worse, not better. 20-bar swings, the classic “Turtle Soup” size, were the worst setting on three of four charts.
- A deep wick of 0.5 ATR or more improved the fade on three charts. The EMA 200 filter made it worse on every EURUSD setting.
A liquidity sweep is a candle that pokes past a swing high or low and closes back inside. Traders read it as “stops taken, now reverse”. Whether that reading holds up across EURUSD and gold is in liquidity sweeps tested: in short, it did not. This page is the practical part, for anyone who wants to mark sweeps in MT4 and test their own settings.
How do I mark swing highs and lows in MT4?

- Fractals. Insert, Indicators, Bill Williams, Fractals. An up arrow marks a high with two lower highs on each side, a down arrow a low with two higher lows on each side. That is a 2-bar swing, the smallest there is.
- Bigger swings by eye. For a 5-bar swing, keep only the fractals that are also the highest or lowest point of five candles on each side. A ZigZag with a depth of 5 to 10 does a similar job.
- Draw the level. Put a horizontal line on the high or low you care about: Insert, Lines, Horizontal Line. A level is “live” until price trades through it.
- Remember the delay. A 5-bar swing is only confirmed 5 candles after it prints, and a fractal two candles after. Earlier, it is still just a candle. How ready-made swing tools compare is in market structure indicator for MT4.
How do I spot a sweep, not a breakout?

- Wait for a candle to trade past the live level.
- Wait for that candle to close. Closed back inside: a sweep. Closed beyond: a breakout. Until the close, you do not know which one it is.
- Measure the wick past the level. Divide it by ATR(14), from Insert, Indicators, Oscillators, Average True Range. That is the depth.
- Set an alert so you are not staring at the chart: in the Terminal window, Alerts tab, right click, Create, Bid greater than the level.
Check how your broker’s candles close before trusting any wick pattern. On the EURUSD M5 feed in this test, 91% of candles closed at their high or low, so only 8.6% of levels were swept and the rest broke. On gold M5 it was 56.6% swept.
How many sweeps does each swing size give?
| Sweeps a trading day | EURUSD M5 | EURUSD M15 | Gold M5 | Gold M15 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 bars each side | 3.0 | 2.9 | 20.6 | 6.2 |
| 5 bars each side | 1.9 | 1.9 | 13.5 | 4.0 |
| 10 bars each side | 1.2 | 1.0 | 6.7 | 2.0 |
| 20 bars each side | 0.8 | 0.4 | 3.5 | 1.2 |
| Median wick, 5-bar swings | 1.3 pips | 1.3 pips | $0.90 | $1.90 |
Doubling the swing size roughly halves the number of sweeps. On gold M5 even 20-bar swings were swept three or four times a day. The share of levels that ended in a sweep barely moved with swing size: 52% to 58% on gold M5, 9% to 11% on EURUSD M5.
Which settings made money?
| 24 fade settings per chart | EURUSD M5 | EURUSD M15 | Gold M5 | Gold M15 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Settings with 30+ trades | 16 | 12 | 17 | 12 |
| Made money after cost | 0 | 2 | 4 | 2 |
| Made money in both halves | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| Best setting | 10 bars, 0.5 ATR | 5 bars, 0.5 ATR | 5 bars, 0.5 ATR | 3 bars, 0.25 ATR, EMA 200 |
| Best, per trade | -1.37 (45) | +1.62 (31) | +0.90 (70) | +1.98 (37) |
Settings: swing size 3, 5, 10 or 20 bars on each side, minimum wick depth 0, 0.25 or 0.5 ATR, with or without the EMA 200 side. Fade the sweep, stop 1.5 ATR, target 3 ATR, 48 bars at most. Pips on EURUSD after a 1 pip spread, dollars an ounce on gold after $0.30.
EURUSD M5 had no setting that made money. The one setting that held in both halves, EURUSD M15 with 5-bar swings and a 0.5 ATR wick, made 0.54 pips a trade in the first half and 3.12 in the second, on 31 trades in total. That is too few to call it more than a lead.
Does a deeper wick or a bigger swing help?
| Fade, per trade after cost | EURUSD M5 | EURUSD M15 | Gold M5 | Gold M15 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 bars, any wick | -2.63 (102) | -2.54 (85) | -0.50 (409) | -3.42 (122) |
| 5 bars, wick 0.5 ATR+ | -1.97 (67) | +1.62 (31) | +0.90 (70) | -3.61 (29) |
| 20 bars, any wick | -4.03 (45) | -2.11 (23) | -1.93 (154) | -5.62 (55) |
| 5 bars, any wick, EMA 200 side | -3.68 (30) | -4.40 (35) | -0.29 (160) | -0.08 (45) |
A deeper wick helped on three charts: when the poke past the level was at least half an ATR, the fade lost less or made money. Bigger swings did the opposite. The 20-bar swing, which should hold the most stops, gave the worst fade on EURUSD M5, gold M5 and gold M15. The trend filter cut the loss on gold and doubled it on EURUSD.
Did the best settings survive the second half?
On gold M5 all four settings that made money did it in the first half only. The best first-half setting, 3-bar swings with a 0.5 ATR wick, made $3.76 an ounce a trade before July 15 and lost $1.08 after it, ranking 11th of 16 in the second half. On gold M15 the best first-half setting made $3.43 and then lost $0.58. The same trap of picking the best past setting is measured in optimized vs default settings, and the split test is the one from EA optimization in and out of sample.
What settings would I use?
- Fractals plus a 5-bar filter for marking levels. Smaller swings flood gold charts with 20 sweeps a day.
- A minimum wick of 0.5 ATR if you watch sweeps at all. It was the only filter that helped on most charts.
- No trade on the sweep alone. 56 of 57 settings failed the both-halves check. Use swing levels for stop placement and context instead: how far stops should sit is in stop loss distance tested.
- Look at the breakout too. Following the close beyond the level lost less than fading the sweep on every chart, as shown in liquidity sweep vs breakout.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a liquidity sweep indicator in MT4?
Not built in. Use Fractals for swing highs and lows, a horizontal line for the level, and a price alert, then judge each candle at its close.
What is the best swing size for liquidity sweeps?
In this test 3 to 5 bars on each side mostly did better than 10 or 20. The 20-bar swing gave the worst fade on three of four charts.
How deep should the wick go past the level?
At least 0.5 ATR. That filter improved the fade on EURUSD M5, EURUSD M15 and gold M5, but only one setting made money in both halves.
Does the EMA 200 filter help sweep trades?
On gold it cut the loss. On EURUSD it made every setting worse.
