RSI Trend Settings for MT4: 30 of 36 Made Money on Gold M15, the Default RSI 14 With the 200 EMA Lost, and 0 of 108 Worked Elsewhere

Key takeaways

  • I tested 36 settings of one RSI trend rule in MT4 terms: RSI period 7, 9, 14 or 21, entry level 50, 45/55 or 40/60, trend filter EMA 50, 100 or 200. Buy when RSI crosses up through the level with price above the EMA, sell the mirror. Stop 1.5 ATR, target 3 ATR, spread included. Four charts: 144 settings in all.
  • On gold M15, 30 of 36 settings made money after cost, and 20 made money in both halves. The best, RSI 14 with 45/55 and EMA 100, made +$3.38 an ounce a trade over 129 trades, +$4.84 and +$2.62 in the two halves.
  • The default, RSI 14 crossing 50 with the 200 EMA, was one of the 6 gold M15 settings that lost: -$0.50 an ounce a trade, +$3.94 in the first half and -$2.28 in the second.
  • On every other chart, 0 of 108 settings made money. On EURUSD M5 and gold M5 not one of 72 was positive even before the spread.
  • Period 21 with 40/60 came last on gold M15 with every EMA, from -$1.17 to -$1.94 an ounce. Periods 7 and 9 and the 45/55 levels had the best medians.

Most RSI guides for MT4 stop at “add RSI 14 and draw a line at 50”. That is a setting, and settings can be measured. This guide shows how to put an RSI trend setup on an MT4 chart and what each choice did on 12 weeks of EURUSD and gold, so you can start from numbers instead of from a default.

Why the rule is built this way, and how it compares with other uses of RSI, is in the RSI trend catcher test and in RSI trend vs overbought and oversold.

How do you set up an RSI trend indicator in MT4?

MetaTrader chart with RSI and an EMA trend filter
  1. Add RSI: Insert, Indicators, Oscillators, Relative Strength Index. On the Parameters tab set Period (14 is the default; the test used 7, 9, 14 and 21) and Apply to: Close.
  2. Add the levels: on the Levels tab delete 30 and 70 and add the entry levels you trade: 50, or 45 and 55, or 40 and 60. RSI will draw them as dotted lines.
  3. Add the trend filter: Insert, Indicators, Trend, Moving Average. Period 50, 100 or 200, MA method Exponential, Apply to Close.
  4. Add ATR for the stop: Insert, Indicators, Oscillators, Average True Range, period 14. The stop is 1.5 times its value, the target 3 times.
  5. Save it: right-click the chart, Template, Save Template, so you can load the same setup on any chart.

The rule on the chart: a bar closes with RSI above the upper level after it was at or below it, and the close is above the EMA: buy. RSI closes below the lower level after it was at or above it, with the close under the EMA: sell. With level 50 both lines are the same line. One trade at a time, close after 48 bars if neither stop nor target is hit. The same setup works in MT5 with the same menus; the RSI swing setup for MT4 walks through the RSI window in more detail.

Which settings made money?

Setting RSI levels in the platform's indicator window

Gold M536000RSI 7, 40/60, EMA 50: -$0.36
Gold M1536313020RSI 14, 45/55, EMA 100: +$3.38

Cost 1 pip per EURUSD trade, $0.30 an ounce per gold trade, from my spread measurement. Every setting had at least 99 trades. Data: EURUSD June 3 to August 26, 2026, gold over the same weeks.

On the 5-minute chart there is nothing to tune: not one of 72 settings was positive even before the spread, so a cheaper broker would not have changed the answer. EURUSD M15 had half its settings positive before cost and none after, the same pattern as the swing RSI vs scalping RSI test: on small bars a pip is too large a share of the move. Gold M15 is the only chart where the setting mattered.

Dollars an ounce per trade. Halves split at July 15, 2026.

Look at the halves before the totals. Every top setting made more in the first half than in the second, some by three times, so expect less than the total from any of them. What matters is that the top five stayed positive after July 15; the default did not.

And be careful with the winner. A coin with the same stop, target and number of trades on gold M15 reached +$2.25 to +$3.07 an ounce in its best 5% of runs, depending on the trade count. Four of the top five cleared their coin line; the winner made +$3.38 against +$2.54. But it is still the best of 36, and the best of 36 is always lucky to some degree. The rule vs random entry test explains why the coin line is the one to beat.

Which choice matters most: period, level or EMA?

Gold M15, median of the settings with that choiceAfter costSettings
RSI period 7+$1.379
RSI period 9+$1.479
RSI period 14+$0.839
RSI period 21+$0.359
Level 50+$1.2812
Levels 45/55+$1.5112
Levels 40/60+$0.2112
EMA 50+$0.5612
EMA 100+$1.5112
EMA 200+$1.1912

The levels mattered most. 40/60 waits for RSI to travel further, so it enters later in the move, and on gold M15 it had the lowest median: +$0.21 against +$1.51 for 45/55. The three worst settings of all 36 were RSI 21 with 40/60, the slowest period with the furthest level. The EMA choice mattered less, and EMA 100 edged out the 200 that most guides use. The filter test found the same about slow trend filters: past a point, a slower line adds lag, not accuracy.

Does the same setup work on EURUSD?

No. On EURUSD M15 the best setting, RSI 14 with 40/60 and EMA 200, lost 0.25 pips a trade over 178 trades, and the worst, RSI 7 with 50 and EMA 100, lost 2.07. On EURUSD M5 every setting lost between 1.13 and 1.79 pips. If you trade EURUSD, this RSI trend rule is not the tool; a lower-cost approach on a slower chart, like the RSI settings for swing trading on H1, did better on this same data.

What settings should you start with?

  • On gold M15: RSI 14, levels 45 and 55, EMA 100, stop 1.5 ATR, target 3 ATR. +$3.38 an ounce a trade in this test, positive in both halves. Test it on your own broker’s data before trading it.
  • Avoid 40/60 levels with a slow RSI. RSI 21 with 40/60 lost with every EMA on gold M15.
  • Do not use the default RSI 14 at 50 with the 200 EMA on gold M15. It lost $0.50 an ounce a trade and $2.28 in the second half.
  • Do not use any of these settings on M5. 0 of 72 were positive even before cost.
  • Manage the exit as carefully as the entry. The same rule with a 12-bar exit gave very different numbers, and the trailing stop settings test shows how much exits move a result.

Should I use RSI 50 or 40/60 levels for trend trading?

On gold M15, 45/55 had the best median, +$1.51 an ounce a trade across 12 settings, then 50 at +$1.28. 40/60 came last at +$0.21 and included the three worst settings of the 36.

Which EMA should I use with RSI as a trend filter?

EMA 100 had the best median on gold M15, +$1.51 an ounce a trade, ahead of EMA 200 at +$1.19 and EMA 50 at +$0.56.

How do I add RSI levels in MT4?

Open the RSI properties, go to the Levels tab, remove 30 and 70 and add the levels you trade, for example 45 and 55. Save the chart as a template to reuse it.
