Momentum vs RSI: RSI Crossed the Middle First More Often, Yet Momentum’s 100 Cross Lost Less on All 4 Charts

Key takeaways
- Momentum and RSI both ask whether price is rising or falling over the last 14 bars. I put Momentum 14 and RSI 14 side by side on EURUSD and gold, M5 and M15, with the same exit and the same costs.
- They moved together at a 0.79 to 0.85 correlation and sat on the same side of the middle (100 and 50) on 84% of bars on all 4 charts.
- Momentum is often called the faster one. It was not: at the middle line, RSI crossed first 37% to 40% of the time and Momentum only 29% to 34%; the rest were on the same bar.
- Yet Momentum’s 100 cross lost less than RSI’s 50 cross on all 4 charts, for example -1.35 against -1.65 pips a trade on EURUSD M5.
- For extremes it was a draw: RSI returning from 70 or 30 lost less on both EURUSD charts, the Momentum fade lost less on both gold charts.
The full test of Momentum on its own is in Momentum indicator tested: 1 of 16 runs passed, and the line never reached 101 or 99 on EURUSD. This page answers the question most traders ask next: if I already have RSI, does Momentum add anything?
How are Momentum and RSI built?

| Momentum 14 | RSI 14 | |
|---|---|---|
| Formula | Close / Close 14 bars ago × 100 | Average up moves vs average down moves, Wilder smoothing |
| Uses | Two closes only | Every close-to-close change |
| Middle line | 100 | 50 |
| Range | Open-ended, depends on the symbol | Fixed, 0 to 100 |
| Common extremes | None fixed | 70 and 30 |
The difference is what each one remembers. Momentum looks at two candles: now and 14 bars ago. RSI looks at every move in between and smooths them, so a big candle fades out of it gradually, while in Momentum it drops out all at once 14 bars later.
How was it tested?

- Data: EURUSD M5, 16,926 bars from June 3 to August 26, 2026; gold M5, 13,736 bars from June 16; M15 built from the same bars.
- Pairs of rules: Momentum crossing 100 against RSI crossing 50; Momentum fading a 50-bar extreme against RSI returning from 70 or 30.
- Exit: stop 1.5 ATR, target 3 ATR, 48 bars, one trade at a time. Cost 1 pip on EURUSD and $0.30 an ounce on gold, as in spread and swap costs in MT4.
- Lead: for each Momentum cross of 100, the nearest RSI cross of 50 in the same direction within 48 bars, and which came first.
How closely do Momentum and RSI move?
| Momentum 14 against RSI 14 | EURUSD M5 | EURUSD M15 | Gold M5 | Gold M15 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Correlation | 0.785 | 0.806 | 0.811 | 0.852 |
| Same side of the middle | 83.8% | 83.7% | 84.2% | 84.4% |
| Momentum crosses of 100 | 2,342 | 724 | 1,750 | 542 |
| RSI crosses of 50 | 2,098 | 659 | 1,586 | 498 |
Close, but not a copy. For comparison, the Awesome Oscillator and MACD moved together at 0.97, and CCI and RSI at 0.85 in CCI vs RSI. On one bar in six Momentum and RSI disagreed about the side, and Momentum crossed its middle 9% to 12% more often than RSI did.
Which one crossed the middle first?
| Matched crosses | EURUSD M5 | EURUSD M15 | Gold M5 | Gold M15 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RSI first | 40.2% | 38.1% | 36.7% | 38.3% |
| Same bar | 30.9% | 28.5% | 29.3% | 27.4% |
| Momentum first | 28.9% | 33.4% | 34.0% | 34.3% |
| Median gap, bars | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Momentum is described as a leading indicator, but RSI got to the middle first more often on every chart. The reason is the two-candle memory: Momentum waits until the close is past the close of 14 bars ago, while RSI starts to tip as soon as recent up moves outweigh down moves. The typical gap was zero bars, so in practice neither one gives you an earlier entry.
Which middle-line cross lost less?
| Average result a trade, after cost | EURUSD M5 | EURUSD M15 | Gold M5 | Gold M15 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Momentum crosses 100 | -1.35 (874) | -1.06 (239) | +0.38 (516) | -0.87 (159) |
| RSI crosses 50 | -1.65 (726) | -1.37 (232) | +0.29 (458) | -0.91 (142) |
| Random entries, 95th percentile | -0.73 | -0.23 | +0.19 | +2.79 |
Pips on EURUSD, dollars an ounce on gold, trades in brackets. Momentum came out ahead on all four charts, by 0.04 to 0.31 a trade. On gold M5 both passed every check: profit in both halves and above the random range. On the other three charts both lost, and on EURUSD M5 both did worse than the median random entry.
So the slower-looking line won the head-to-head, but the margin is small next to the spread. A 1-pip cost was about three times larger than the gap between the two on EURUSD.
What about overbought and oversold?
| Average result a trade, after cost | EURUSD M5 | EURUSD M15 | Gold M5 | Gold M15 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Momentum fades a 50-bar extreme | -0.87 (668) | -0.66 (208) | -0.25 (506) | -0.05 (149) |
| RSI returns from 70 or 30 | -0.54 (369) | +0.20 (123) | -0.30 (330) | -3.31 (110) |
RSI did better on EURUSD, Momentum on gold, and neither passed. RSI 70/30 on EURUSD M15 made +0.20 pips a trade, but +1.26 in the first half and -0.84 in the second, and it stayed inside its random range. The fixed 70 and 30 give RSI an advantage Momentum does not have: they mean the same thing on every symbol. Momentum needs a rolling extreme, because, as the main test showed, a fixed 101 never came on EURUSD. Whether RSI’s 70 and 30 work better with a trend filter is in RSI trend vs overbought and oversold.
Which one should I keep on the chart?
- Not both. They agree on the side 84% of the time, so the second one mostly repeats the first, the same lesson as in indicator combo vs single indicator.
- RSI if you want fixed levels. 70 and 30 mean the same on EURUSD and gold; Momentum levels have to be measured per symbol.
- Momentum if you trade the middle-line cross. It lost less on all 4 charts here, though not by enough to beat the spread on EURUSD.
- Neither one for an earlier entry. The median gap between their crosses was zero bars. How the period changes Momentum is in Momentum indicator settings for MT4.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Momentum and RSI?
Momentum compares two closes, now and 14 bars ago, and has no fixed range. RSI averages every up and down move over 14 bars and runs from 0 to 100. Here they moved together at a 0.79 to 0.85 correlation.
Is Momentum faster than RSI?
Not in this test. At the middle line RSI crossed first on 37% to 40% of matched crosses and Momentum on 29% to 34%; the median gap was zero bars.
Which is better, Momentum or RSI?
For the middle-line cross, Momentum lost less on all 4 charts. For overbought and oversold, RSI lost less on EURUSD and Momentum on gold. Both passed only on gold M5.
Can I use Momentum and RSI together?
You can, but they agreed on the side of the middle on 84% of bars, so the second one rarely tells you something new.
