Chart Patterns vs a Plain Range Breakout: The 30-Bar Box Lost Less on 4 of 4 Charts, and Breakouts That Were Also a Pattern Did Worse

Key takeaways

  • I put chart pattern breakouts (triangles, wedges, channels, rectangles, flags) against the plainest breakout there is: a close above the highest high or below the lowest low of the same 30 bars. EURUSD and gold, M5 and M15, same exits, spread included.
  • The plain box lost less per trade on 4 of 4 charts with a 1.5 ATR stop and 3 ATR target. On gold M15 it made +$1.40 an ounce a trade, the patterns +$0.35.
  • The box reached its own measured target 49% to 59% of the time, the patterns 35% to 36%. And the box had fewer false breakouts on all 4 charts.
  • When a box breakout was also a pattern breakout, it did worse on 4 of 4 charts. On gold M15 the box without a pattern made +$2.13 a trade, the box with one lost $0.79.
  • Neither is a trading edge on its own: on EURUSD both lost money on M5 and M15.

A triangle takes skill to see. You need two swing highs, two swing lows, the right slopes, a clean breakout. A range breakout takes none: draw a line at the highest high of the last 30 bars and one at the lowest low, and trade the close beyond either. If spotting the shape is worth the effort, the pattern should beat the box.

In the chart pattern test 790 pattern breakouts followed through less often than random bars. Here is the comparison that matters to a pattern trader: is the pattern at least better than the dumb version of the same idea?

How was the comparison set up?

A close above the range high, the plain breakout the patterns were measured against
  • Patterns: lines through the last two swing highs and the last two swing lows of a 30-bar window, swings of 3 bars on each side, classified as triangle, wedge, channel, rectangle or flag. Breakout on a close beyond the projected line. The rules are in the pattern test.
  • Box: a close above the highest high or below the lowest low of the previous 30 bars, with the previous close inside. A Donchian channel indicator, free for MT4 and MT5, draws the same two lines.
  • Both count one breakout per 15 bars, one trade at a time.
  • Exits: stop 1.5 ATR, target 3 ATR, close after 48 bars at most; and the textbook exit: stop beyond the opposite side, target the height of the shape, 96 bars at most.
  • Data: EURUSD June 3 to August 26, 2026, 16,926 M5 bars and 5,642 M15 bars; gold over the same weeks, 13,736 M5 bars and 4,577 M15 bars. Cost 1 pip per EURUSD trade, $0.30 an ounce on gold, from my spread and swap measurement.

Which breakout followed through more often?

Comparing a pattern breakout with a box breakout on the same bars
Breakout+1 ATR before -1 ATR: boxPatternsBack inside within 3 bars: boxPatterns
EURUSD M541.5%43.0%32.8%41.9%
Gold M551.2%46.9%45.5%49.1%
EURUSD M1543.6%40.7%34.3%53.7%
Gold M1551.1%47.3%48.2%54.8%

Box breakouts: 518, 420, 172 and 137. Pattern breakouts: 265, 324, 108 and 93. A random bar reaches +1 ATR first 49.2% to 50.3% of the time on these charts.

The box followed through more often on 3 of 4 charts, and on gold it was a hair over the coin on both timeframes. The patterns were under the coin everywhere. The clearer difference is in false breakouts: on EURUSD M15 one pattern breakout in two closed back inside within 3 bars, against one box breakout in three.

There is a reason in the geometry. A box breakout is a close at a 30-bar high, beyond every bar of the window. A pattern breakout is a close beyond a sloping line, which can be well inside the recent range. A descending triangle’s upper line, for example, falls toward price, so the “breakout” can come at a price the market traded at an hour earlier.

Which one made more per trade?

After cost, per tradeBox, ATR exitPatterns, ATR exitBox, textbook exitPatterns, textbook exit
EURUSD M5 (pips)-1.35 (478)-1.52 (218)-2.27-1.43
Gold M5 ($ an ounce)-0.51 (374)-0.90 (241)+0.77-1.47
EURUSD M15 (pips)-1.10 (157)-1.98 (82)-1.78-3.51
Gold M15 ($ an ounce)+1.40 (116)+0.35 (69)+4.56+1.09

Trades in brackets for the ATR exit. Better of each pair in bold.

With the ATR exit the box lost less on all 4 charts. With the textbook exit it did better on 3 of 4; only on EURUSD M5 did the patterns lose less. On gold M15 the box with its own measured target made +$4.56 an ounce a trade, four times the patterns’ +$1.09.

The textbook target explains much of that. The box reached its measured move, the height of the 30-bar range, before the stop 49.4%, 55.6%, 53.2% and 58.9% of the time on the four charts. The patterns reached theirs 36.0%, 35.6%, 35.2% and 35.6% of the time, held down by triangles, whose target came first in only about one case in four.

Does a pattern make a box breakout better?

This is the fairest test of the pattern idea. Take only the box breakouts and split them in two: those that happened within 2 bars of a pattern breakout, and those that did not. If the pattern adds information, the first group should do better.

Box breakoutWith a patternWithoutATR exit, with a patternWithout
EURUSD M536.4% (54)42.1% (464)-2.31 pips-1.31 pips
Gold M560.8% (73)49.1% (347)-$0.74-$0.62
EURUSD M1543.5% (23)43.6% (149)-2.40 pips-1.00 pips
Gold M1543.8% (16)52.1% (121)-$0.79+$2.13

First two columns: +1 ATR before -1 ATR, breakouts in brackets. Last two: per trade after cost.

The box breakouts that came with a pattern did worse in money on all 4 charts. Only on gold M5 did they follow through more often, 60.8% against 49.1%, and that did not survive the exit. The group with a pattern is small, 16 to 73 breakouts, so one chart could be luck. Four out of four in the same direction is harder to wave away.

What about candlestick patterns?

The other family of patterns is the candle. In the candlestick patterns vs indicators comparison, an engulfing bar alone was right 44.8% of the time, exactly as often as a plain EMA crossover, and adding MACD as confirmation made it worse: -1.25 pips a trade against -0.64 without it. Here the chart pattern did the same thing to the box breakout. In both families, adding the pattern as confirmation took money away instead of adding it.

So should you trade the box instead?

  • Not on its own. On EURUSD the box lost on both timeframes and with both exits.
  • But if you trade breakouts, the box is the cleaner version. Fewer false breakouts on 4 of 4 charts, less lost per trade on 4 of 4, and a measured target that came first about half the time.
  • Do not add a pattern as confirmation. Box breakouts that were also pattern breakouts did worse in money on every chart.
  • On gold the box was close to working. +$1.40 a trade on M15 with the ATR exit is the kind of starting point that a filter like the one in my multi-timeframe test could be tested on.

Breakouts sized by volatility instead of a range are in the ATR breakout test, and bands built from ATR are compared with Bollinger Bands in ATR channel vs Bollinger Bands. How to set up a pattern tool in MetaTrader, and which settings did best, is in the chart pattern indicator guide.

Limits of this comparison

About ten weeks of bars, two markets, two timeframes, one window of 30 bars for both methods. A longer window changes both the box and the patterns, and the settings guide covers 20 to 80 bars for the patterns. Gold fell about 10% to late June, ranged in July and rallied in August, which helps any breakout. The group of box breakouts with a pattern is small on M15.

Frequently asked questions

Are chart patterns better than a simple breakout?

Not in this test. A close beyond the 30-bar high or low lost less per trade than the pattern breakouts on all 4 charts with a 1.5 ATR stop and 3 ATR target, and had fewer false breakouts on all 4.

What is a range breakout strategy?

Buy when a candle closes above the highest high of the last N bars and sell when it closes below the lowest low. Here N was 30; the Donchian channel indicator draws those two lines.

Does a triangle confirm a breakout?

No. Box breakouts that were also pattern breakouts made less per trade than box breakouts without a pattern on 4 of 4 charts, for example -$0.79 against +$2.13 an ounce on gold M15.

How often does a range breakout hit its measured move?

The full height of the 30-bar range was reached before the stop on the other side 49.4% to 58.9% of the time. For chart patterns the same target came first 35.2% to 36.0% of the time.
