Multi-Indicator MT4 Template: 23 of 192 Made Money, and All 23 Shared One Base

Key takeaways

  • I built every sensible multi-indicator template out of MT4’s own standard indicators — 8 base signals × 8 filter choices × 3 holding times — and tested all 192 variants on the same 16,926 EURUSD 5-minute bars.
  • 32 finished positive before costs, 23 after a 1-pip spread — and all 23 ran the same base indicator: the 50/200 EMA cross.
  • Not one template built on RSI, Stochastic, MACD, CCI, Bollinger, ADX or Parabolic SAR as its entry survived costs, no matter which of the seven others was added as the filter.
  • The filter mattered far less than the two settings nobody talks about: which indicator fires the entry, and how long you hold. Adding a filter helped in only 43 of 168 cases.
  • Best template of the 192: MA cross 50/200 as entry, MACD as filter, 48-bar hold — 78 trades, 56.4%, +3.04 pips each. Unfiltered, the same entry made +2.54.
  • Everything here is free and already installed. There is no template to buy, and the whole thing is three standard MT4 indicators on one chart.

Search for a multi-indicator MT4 template and you will find hundreds, most of them a chart with six windows, four arrows and a dashboard. What you will not find is a number attached to any of them.

This guide is the numbers. I took the eight indicators that ship with MetaTrader 4 as standard, tried each one as the entry signal, tried each of the other seven as the confirming filter, tried three holding times, and measured all 192 resulting templates the same way — on the same 16,926 EURUSD 5-minute bars I used in my test of all 56 indicator pairs.

Then I kept the ones that made money after a 1-pip spread. There were 23, and they had something in common that the other 169 did not.

What the 192 templates are

MetaTrader 4 Navigator panel open with the standard indicator list showing
ComponentOptions tested
Entry signal (base)MA cross 50/200, MACD 12/26/9, RSI 14 vs 50, Stochastic 14/3/3, CCI 20 vs zero, Bollinger 20 midline, ADX +DI/-DI, Parabolic SAR 0.02/0.2 — 8 options
Confirming filterAny of the other seven, or none — 8 options
Hold12 bars (1 hour), 24 bars (2 hours), 48 bars (4 hours) — 3 options
Cost1 pip per round turn, applied to every variant
RuleEnter at the close of the bar where the entry flips, provided the filter already agrees. No stop, no target, fixed exit.

Every one of these indicators is in MT4’s Navigator window already, under Trend or Oscillators. Nothing needs downloading, so if you have not set up a chart before, start with setting up your first MT4 chart and come back.

Read the last two rows twice. Of the 24 templates using the 50/200 cross as their entry, 23 made money after costs. Of the 168 using anything else, zero did.

That is the whole finding. Building a template is not a matter of assembling indicators until the chart looks convincing. One of the eight boxes decides the outcome, and the rest are decoration — the same conclusion I reached about settings in the optimised versus default settings test.

Which template was best?

The top variant beat the unfiltered version by half a pip per trade — but look at the fourth row. Doing nothing at all, no filter whatsoever, finished fourth of 24 and produced the highest total profit in the entire study (+251 pips), because it kept all 99 trades instead of 78.

The bottom row is the single MA-cross template that lost money, and it is the one filtered by the fastest indicator on the list. The Stochastic cut 101 signals to 53 and turned +0.71 pips into -0.26. If you take one practical rule from this page: do not filter a slow entry with a fast oscillator.

Which input is worth touching?

Here is the same 192 variants read as three separate questions.

InputEffect on resultSize of effect
Which indicator gives the entryDecides everything. 23 of 23 survivors shared one.up to 4.2 pips
How long you holdAverage win rate 41.8% at 1 h, 43.4% at 2 h, 46.4% at 4 h4.6 points
Which filter you addHelped in 43 of 168 cases, hurt in 125-0.20 pips avg

Averaged over all 168 filtered variants, adding a confirming indicator cost 0.20 pips and 1.17 win-rate points. The best filter anywhere in the grid added 3.3 points; the worst subtracted more than that. That is a coin toss dressed as a setting.

Meanwhile the hold — a number most templates do not even expose — moved the average win rate by 4.6 points in a straight line. This matches what I found about exits in the stop loss distance test and the fixed versus ATR stop comparison: the exit rule is doing more work than the entry decoration.

How to build the surviving template in MT4

Three indicators, all standard, about two minutes.

  1. Open a EURUSD M5 chart. Right-click → Properties → set the chart to a plain background so you can see the lines.
  2. Add EMA 50. Insert → Indicators → Trend → Moving Average. Period 50, MA method Exponential, Apply to Close.
  3. Add EMA 200. Same dialog, period 200, Exponential. These two produce the entry: long when the 50 is above the 200, short when it is below, and the signal is the bar where that changes.
  4. Add MACD. Insert → Indicators → Oscillators → MACD. Fast 12, Slow 26, Signal 9. Note that MT4’s built-in MACD draws a histogram plus one signal line, not two lines — if you want the classic two-line view you need the version I describe in my 2-line MACD guide.
  5. Set the rule. Take the EMA cross only when MACD is already on the same side of its signal line. Skip it otherwise.
  6. Set the exit before you enter. 48 bars on M5 is four hours. Put it in the order as a time-based exit or set a reminder — this is the input that carried the result.
  7. Save it. Charts → Template → Save Template. Now it is one click on any chart.

If you are on MT5, the same five indicators exist with the same names and inputs, and the procedure is identical — see how to add indicators to MT5. The differences between the platforms are covered in my MT4 versus MT5 comparison, and none of them affect this template.

What this template is and is not

It is 78 trades over three months on one pair, one timeframe and one three-month window. It is not a system, and 236 pips of gross profit is not an income.

Three honest caveats, in order of importance:

CaveatWhat it means for you
23 survivors out of 192Test 192 things and a few will look good by chance. The survivors clustering on one base is reassuring; their exact ranking is not.
78 to 101 tradesA win rate of 56% on 78 trades has a wide error band. The direction is meaningful, the decimal is not.
One trending windowEURUSD fell through much of June to August 2026. A 50/200 cross is a trend follower; trend followers flatter themselves in trending data.

The reason I still publish it is the 168 rows that failed. Their failure is not a fluke of a three-month window — no filter, no hold and no combination rescued a single fast entry, and that was consistent across 168 variants. The negative result is the sturdier half of this page, in the same way it was for the arrow indicator repaint study.

What I would actually do with this

  • Pick your entry indicator first and slowly. It decided 23 of 23 surviving templates. Everything else is trim.
  • Use a slow entry. 101 signals in three months beat 4,197. If your template fires several times a day on M5, it is on the wrong side of the only variable that mattered.
  • Set the hold deliberately. Going from 1 hour to 4 added 4.6 points of average win rate across the whole grid — more than any filter did.
  • Add at most one filter, and never a fast one. MACD, ADX and the Bollinger midline helped slightly; the Stochastic was the only filter that turned a winning template into a losing one.
  • Compare every template against the unfiltered version. On this grid, no filter at all finished fourth of 24 and made the most total pips. That is the benchmark your template has to beat.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best multi-indicator template for MT4?

Of 192 variants tested on 16,926 EURUSD 5-minute bars, the best was the 50/200 EMA cross as the entry, MACD 12/26/9 as the filter and a 4-hour hold: 78 trades, 56.4% win rate, +3.04 pips per trade after a 1-pip cost. The unfiltered version of the same entry made more in total (+251 pips) because it took 99 trades instead of 78.

How many indicators should a template have?

Two, and possibly one. Adding a confirming filter helped in 43 of 168 cases and cost 0.20 pips per trade on average. The unfiltered 50/200 cross produced the highest total profit of any of the 192 variants.

Which indicators come free with MT4?

All eight tested here: Moving Average, MACD, RSI, Stochastic, CCI, Bollinger Bands, ADX and Parabolic SAR, all under Insert → Indicators. No download or purchase is required for any part of this template. Installing third-party ones is covered in how to install an MT4 indicator.

Why did every template without a moving average cross fail?

Because those entries fire far too often for a 1-pip cost. The Stochastic generated 4,197 signals in three months against 101 for the 50/200 cross, and lost 1.08 pips on each one. No filter reduced that frequency enough to matter — the best filtered version of a fast entry still lost 0.87 pips per trade.

Should the filter be on the same timeframe?

Everything here is single-timeframe on M5. Moving the filter to a higher timeframe is a different study, and I ran the related version of it in my ADX trend filter test — a stronger filter on the same data did not rescue a fast entry either.

Is a 56% win rate enough to trade?

Not by itself, and not from 78 trades. With a fixed 4-hour exit and no target, win rate and average size are two different questions, and position sizing decides whether either one matters — see my position sizing table. Treat the number as evidence about which inputs matter, not as a promise about next month.
