How to Use ADX on MT5 Without Overtrading

Key takeaways
- ADX is already in MT5 as Average Directional Movement Index under Trend. There is nothing to download, and the default period of 14 is the one worth keeping.
- Overtrading comes from reading ADX as a green light. On EURUSD 5-minute bars the line sat above 25 for 35.8% of all bars, which is roughly 8.5 hours of every day.
- The setting that stopped the overtrading was not the threshold, it was the hold time. Same entries at eight hours: 58.8% win rate, +3.15 pips, against 36.0% and -0.48 at 30 minutes. Sample caution: the eight hour row is 51 trades and the column changes sign three times on the way there, so treat it as a direction, not a settled number.
- Use the +DI and -DI lines for direction and the ADX line only for strength. That is the one configuration where the indicator improved results in my testing.
ADX on MT5 is a strength meter, not an entry signal, and treating it as an entry signal is the single most common way traders turn one indicator into forty trades a week. This guide covers where the indicator lives in MT5, which settings actually matter, and the three rules that kept my own testing from degenerating into overtrading.
Where is ADX in MT5 and how do I add it?
- Open the chart you want, then Insert → Indicators → Trend.
- Choose Average Directional Movement Index. In MT4 the same item is called ADX and sits in the same menu.
- Leave the period at 14. Set Apply to Close.
- In the Levels tab add a line at 20, not 25. My threshold testing is in the ADX above 25 test, and 20 was the only level that improved the average trade.
- Drag the indicator into its own subwindow rather than onto price. Overlaying it on the candles is how people end up reading it as direction.
You will see three lines: the ADX line itself and the two directional lines, +DI and -DI. Most tutorials hide the DI lines. Do the opposite, because they carry the only information about which way the market is going.
Which ADX settings actually matter?
| Setting | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Period | 14 | Shorter periods make the line jump and produce more false permissions. The indicator is already double smoothed, so shortening it fights its own design. |
| Level line | 20 | Above 20 was the only filter that turned my test system’s average trade positive. Above 25 made it worse. |
| Apply to | Close | ADX is built from highs and lows internally. Changing this field mostly confuses the reading. |
| Subwindow height | Enough to see 0 to 60 | Readings above 60 are rare. The highest in my three month sample was 68.8. |
| DI lines | Visible, two colours | They are the direction half of the indicator and the half that improved results. |
How often is ADX actually high?
This is the number that explains overtrading better than any rule. Across 16,926 EURUSD 5-minute bars from June 3 to August 26, 2026:
| Reading | Share of bars | Roughly per 24h |
|---|---|---|
| Above 20 | 55.7% | 13.4 hours |
| Above 25 | 35.8% | 8.5 hours |
| Above 30 | 21.9% | 5.3 hours |
| Above 40 | 7.0% | 1.7 hours |
If your rule is “trade when ADX is above 25”, the market grants you permission for eight and a half hours a day. That is not a filter, that is a schedule. The median reading over the whole window was 21.3, so the famous line sits barely above the middle of the range.
The three rules that stop the overtrading
Rule 1: hold long enough for the trend you filtered for
This mattered more than any threshold. The same ADX above 25 entries, measured at different hold times:
| Hold | Signals | Win rate | Avg pips |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 minutes | 75 | 36.0% | -0.48 |
| 1 hour | 72 | 45.8% | +0.80 |
| 2 hours | 66 | 40.9% | -1.21 |
| 4 hours | 61 | 45.9% | -0.65 |
| 8 hours | 51 | 58.8% | +3.15 |
Filtering for a trend and then exiting in half an hour is a contradiction with a spread attached. If you are not willing to sit in the position, ADX is not the tool for the decision you are making.
Rule 2: let DI decide direction, ADX decide size
Take the entry from the +DI and -DI crossover, and use the ADX level only to decide whether to take it at all. In my testing DI crossovers went from -0.69 pips per trade to +0.15 once ADX above 25 was required. That is the only configuration where adding ADX improved anything.
Rule 3: cap the trade count before you look at the chart
Decide the maximum number of positions for the session in advance. ADX above 25 produced 66 tradable crossovers in three months, roughly one a day. If your live count is far above that, the indicator is not what is generating your trades, your screen time is. The hour by hour range data in my session study is a better way to choose when to be at the desk.
Common mistakes I see with ADX
- Reading a falling ADX as a reversal. A falling ADX means the trend is weakening, not turning. Direction is the DI lines’ job.
- Shortening the period to get more signals. More signals from a lagging indicator is more lag, delivered more often.
- Stacking ADX with another trend filter. Combining it with Supertrend produced the worst result of four versions in my ADX against Supertrend comparison.
- Using ADX to justify a scalp. Scalping horizons are exactly where the filter lost, as the hold table above shows. For short horizons, an oscillator is the better fit, compared in my Stochastic against RSI test.
Frequently asked questions
Is ADX in MT5 different from ADX in MT4?
The calculation is the same Wilder method with the same default period. The MT5 version is called Average Directional Movement Index and sits in the Trend folder, with an ADX Wilder variant alongside it that uses Wilder’s original smoothing. Either is fine for the uses above.
What is a good ADX value to enter a trade?
There is no value that is an entry on its own, because ADX has no direction. As a permission level, 20 tested better than 25 on EURUSD 5-minute bars in my window. Full numbers are in the threshold test.
Can I use ADX on a daily chart instead?
Yes, and the 25 convention was designed for exactly that timeframe. My measurements are intraday only, so treat the specific numbers here as intraday numbers.
Does ADX repaint?
No. It is calculated from closed bars, so a finished bar’s value does not change. The current forming bar’s value moves until it closes, which is true of every indicator and is not repainting.
What should I combine ADX with?
Its own DI lines first. If you want a second instrument for context, a slow moving average pair is a better companion than another volatility filter, and the settings I use are in my moving average settings guide. My full crossover results are in the crossover test.
