DeMarker Settings for MT4: 1 of 19 Made Money on EURUSD M5, and the Best First-Half Gold M15 Setting Lost in the Second Half

Key takeaways
- DeMarker comes with MetaTrader 4 with a single input, the period (14), and levels at 0.3 and 0.7. This guide shows how to add it, which level to add, and what 20 settings did on EURUSD and gold, M5 and M15.
- I ran 10 periods, 5, 7, 10, 14, 20, 28, 40, 55, 89 and 120, each traded two ways: the return from 0.7 / 0.3 and the cross of 0.5. 80 runs, 74 of them with at least 30 trades.
- On EURUSD M5, 1 of 19 settings made money after a 1-pip spread: period 89 with the zone return, on only 31 trades. The default 14 lost on all 4 charts.
- Gold was kinder, 15 of 37 settings above zero, and the slower 0.5 crosses, periods 20 and 28, made money on 3 of 4 charts.
- The best first-half setting on gold M15 lost in the second half: period 28 with the 0.5 cross made $5.85 an ounce a trade, then lost $1.08 and ranked 11th of 16.
The full test of the indicator is in DeMarker indicator tested: 0 of 16 default runs passed, and on gold the “overbought” zone was followed by more rise more often than not. This page is the practical part: how to set DeMarker up in MT4 and whether a different period changed the result.
How do I add DeMarker to MT4?

- In MT4, open Insert, Indicators, Oscillators, DeMarker. Or find it in the Navigator window under Indicators, Oscillators, and drag it onto the chart.
- In the Parameters tab, set the Period (14 by default). There is no “Apply to” field: DeMarker always uses the highs and lows.
- In the Levels tab you will find 0.3 and 0.7. Add 0.5 if you want the middle line.
- Save the chart as a template (right-click the chart, Template, Save Template) if you use it on many charts.
MT5 has the same indicator in the same menu with the same input. If your MT4 is still empty, the setup from scratch is in MT4 first chart setup.
Which levels should I use?

| DeMarker 14, share of bars | EURUSD M5 | EURUSD M15 | Gold M5 | Gold M15 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beyond 0.7 / 0.3 | 32.7% | 33.7% | 39.1% | 42.8% |
| Beyond 0.8 / 0.2 | 13.6% | 14.3% | 17.0% | 18.9% |
| Middle 90% of bars | 0.17 to 0.83 | 0.18 to 0.85 | 0.15 to 0.84 | 0.15 to 0.86 |
Unlike Momentum, DeMarker has a fixed scale, so the same levels mean roughly the same thing on any symbol. The default 0.7 and 0.3 are wide: a third of bars or more sit beyond them. If you want a rarer extreme, 0.8 and 0.2 roughly halve that. Rarer did not mean better, though: the return from 0.8 / 0.2 still lost on all 4 charts.
How was it tested?
- Data: EURUSD M5 from June 3 to August 26, 2026, 16,926 bars; gold M5 from June 16 to August 26, 13,736 bars. M15 built from the same bars.
- Grid: periods 5, 7, 10, 14, 20, 28, 40, 55, 89, 120. “Return”: sell when DeMarker falls back below 0.7, buy when it climbs back above 0.3. “Cross”: buy above 0.5, sell below. Runs with fewer than 30 trades are not counted.
- Exit and cost: stop 1.5 ATR, target 3 ATR, 48 bars at most. 1 pip on EURUSD, $0.30 an ounce on gold, from spread and swap costs in MT4. Halves split on July 15.
How many DeMarker settings made money?
| Settings with 30+ trades | EURUSD M5 | EURUSD M15 | Gold M5 | Gold M15 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Counted | 19 | 18 | 19 | 18 |
| In profit after cost | 1 | 4 | 6 | 9 |
| In profit in both halves | 1 | 4 | 3 | 2 |
| Default 14, return from 0.7 / 0.3 | -1.24 pips | -1.79 pips | -$0.25 | -$0.89 |
| Default 14, cross of 0.5 | -1.45 pips | -0.31 pips | +$0.07 | -$0.04 |
20 of 74 settings ended above zero, 5 on EURUSD and 15 on gold. That is more than Momentum managed, but look at where they sit.
| Net per trade | EURUSD M5 | EURUSD M15 | Gold M5 | Gold M15 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Return, period 5 | -1.10 | -1.10 | -0.37 | +0.41 |
| Return, period 7 | -1.14 | -1.34 | -0.73 | -1.67 |
| Return, period 10 | -1.18 | -1.80 | -0.53 | +0.82 |
| Return, period 14 | -1.24 | -1.79 | -0.25 | -0.89 |
| Return, period 20 | -1.21 | -1.66 | -0.06 | +0.68 |
| Return, period 28 | -1.21 | -1.02 | -0.04 | +0.34 |
| Return, period 40 | -1.42 | +0.86 | -0.33 | -3.30 |
| Return, period 55 | -0.95 | +0.48 | -0.86 | +3.67 |
| Cross 0.5, period 14 | -1.45 | -0.31 | +0.07 | -0.04 |
| Cross 0.5, period 20 | -1.07 | +0.50 | +0.61 | +0.30 |
| Cross 0.5, period 28 | -1.14 | +0.89 | +0.78 | +0.90 |
| Cross 0.5, period 40 | -1.05 | -1.32 | +0.32 | -0.86 |
| Cross 0.5, period 55 | -1.41 | -1.30 | +0.20 | -4.88 |
EURUSD in pips, gold in dollars an ounce, per trade after cost. On gold M15 the zone return jumps between profit and loss from one period to the next: +$0.82 at 10, -$0.89 at 14, +$3.67 at 55 but -$3.30 at 40. A setting whose neighbours lose that much is noise, not a sweet spot. The one pattern that held across charts was the 0.5 cross at 20 and 28 bars, which made money on EURUSD M15 and both gold charts and lost on EURUSD M5.
Did the best first-half setting keep winning?
| Best setting June 3 to July 15 | EURUSD M5 | EURUSD M15 | Gold M5 | Gold M15 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Setting | Return 89 | Cross 28 | Cross 120 | Cross 28 |
| First half, per trade | +1.79 | +1.29 | +1.94 | +5.85 |
| Second half, per trade | +0.07 | +0.52 | +0.65 | -1.08 |
| Rank in the second half | 1 of 19 | 3 of 18 | 4 of 19 | 11 of 16 |
Three of four first-half winners stayed positive, but each one earned much less in the second half, and on EURUSD M5 the “winner” made 0.07 pips a trade on 15 trades. On gold M15 the best first-half setting turned into a loser. That is the usual shape of optimisation on short data, the same as in EA optimization in and out of sample and optimized vs default settings.
Which DeMarker settings would I use?
- Keep 14 and the default levels for reading the chart, not for entries. The default lost on all 4 charts with the zone return.
- If you test one change, test a slower 0.5 cross. Periods 20 and 28 made money on 3 of 4 charts, but lost on EURUSD M5 and were never checked against random entries here, so treat them as a lead.
- Do not trust a single winning period. On gold M15 the return at 55 made $3.67 a trade while 40 lost $3.30.
- Check your levels before you trade them. A third of bars beyond 0.7 / 0.3 means the zone itself is not a signal; the measured version is in DeMarker vs Stochastic.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best DeMarker setting for MT4?
No setting won everywhere. Period 89 with the zone return was the only one in profit on EURUSD M5, on 31 trades; periods 20 and 28 with the 0.5 cross made money on EURUSD M15 and both gold charts. The default 14 lost on all 4 charts with the zone return.
What period should I use for DeMarker on a 5-minute chart?
On EURUSD M5, 18 of 19 settings lost after a 1-pip spread, so the period was not the problem. On gold M5 the 0.5 cross with periods 14 to 55 stayed above zero, and 20 and 28 made money in both halves.
Where is DeMarker in MT4?
Insert, Indicators, Oscillators, DeMarker, or the same folder in the Navigator window. It has one input, the period, and draws levels at 0.3 and 0.7.
Should I change DeMarker levels to 0.8 and 0.2?
It halves the number of bars in a zone, from about a third to about a sixth. In this test the return from 0.8 / 0.2 still lost on EURUSD and gold, M5 and M15.
