Aroon Indicator Tested: It Called a Strong Trend on 39% to 43% of Bars, EURUSD Followed It No More Often Than a Random Bar, and 1 of 20 Runs Passed

Key takeaways

  • The Aroon indicator says a market is in a strong trend when Aroon Up is at 70 or higher and Aroon Down is at 30 or lower, or the other way round. I measured that promise on EURUSD and gold, M5 and M15: 16,926 EURUSD bars and 13,736 gold bars.
  • Aroon called a strong trend on 39% to 43% of all bars, on every chart. A typical “strong trend” lasted 7 to 8 candles, and on EURUSD M5 a new one started about 14 times a trading day.
  • After a strong trend began, price went 1 ATR in the trend’s direction first only 45% to 54% of the time. A random bar with a random side did 47% to 51%.
  • Only 1 of 20 Aroon runs passed all three checks: the ±50 oscillator cross on gold M5, +$0.46 an ounce a trade. On EURUSD M5 all five rules lost after the spread.
  • The one surprise: on EURUSD M5, trading against a fresh Aroon 100 made money before cost, +0.45 pips a trade, while following it lost 0.25. The “consolidation” reading did work a little on EURUSD: the next hour was 12% to 16% calmer.

Tushar Chande published the Aroon indicator in 1995. The name is Sanskrit for “dawn’s early light”, and the idea is that it shows a new trend early. It does not look at how far price moved. It only counts how many candles have passed since the highest high and the lowest low of the last n candles.

Most guides repeat the same three readings: Up above 70 with Down below 30 is a strong uptrend, the mirror is a strong downtrend, and both lines under 50 means the market is consolidating. Each of those is a claim about what comes next, so each one can be counted.

What does the Aroon indicator measure?

A trading chart with two indicator lines under the price, one rising to the top as a new high is made
PartHow it is calculated
Aroon Up100 × (n – candles since the highest high of the last n + 1 candles) / n
Aroon Down100 × (n – candles since the lowest low of the last n + 1 candles) / n
Aroon oscillatorAroon Up – Aroon Down, from -100 to +100
Period25 in Chande’s original; many MT4 versions and TradingView use 14

Aroon Up is 100 on the candle that makes a new n-candle high, and it falls by 100/n with every candle that does not. With period 25 that is 4 points a candle. So Up at 70 or more simply means the latest high is at most 7 candles old. Aroon has no memory of size: a new high by one tenth of a pip counts the same as a new high by 30 pips.

How was it tested?

A trader checking whether a strong-trend reading on the Aroon indicator led anywhere
  • Data: EURUSD M5 from June 3 to August 26, 2026, 16,926 bars; gold M5 from June 16 to August 26, 13,736 bars. M15 built from the same bars.
  • States: every bar labelled with Aroon 25 as strong uptrend (Up ≥ 70, Down ≤ 30), strong downtrend (the mirror), consolidation (both under 50) or nothing in particular.
  • What comes next: from the first bar of each strong trend, which came first within 48 bars, a 1 ATR move with the trend or against it, compared with random bars and random sides.
  • Five rules, Aroon 25: Up crosses Down; the same cross on the EMA 200 side only; Up reaches 100 while Down is at 30 or less (and the mirror); the oscillator crosses +50 or -50; and a fade that takes the opposite side of that Aroon 100.
  • Exit and pass: stop 1.5 ATR, target 3 ATR, 48 bars at most, one trade at a time, the same exit as in the forex indicators list, ranked. Cost 1 pip on EURUSD and $0.30 an ounce on gold, from spread and swap costs in MT4. A run passes if it makes money after cost, in both halves (split July 15), and beats the 95th percentile of 200 random-entry runs with the same exit, as in algorithmic rule vs random entry.

Two bars in five carried the “strong trend” label, on both pairs and both timeframes. That is not a rare event. On the 5-minute chart a new strong trend began about every 35 minutes of the trading day, and the median one was over after 8 candles, 40 minutes.

That follows from the formula. Up stays at 70 or more for 7 or 8 candles after any new 25-candle high, however small. On a 5-minute chart a fresh 2-hour high is not much of a trend.

On EURUSD the strong-trend label told you nothing about the next move. On M5 it matched the random bar to a tenth of a point, 46.6% against 46.7%, and on M15 it was worse than random, 44.6% against 49.2%. Gold M5 was the only chart where the label pointed the right way more often: 54.3% against 51.0%.

The plain Up and Down cross looked better on gold M15, 57.4%, but on only 190 crosses. That is the chart where trend tools did best in most of our tests, as in gold vs EURUSD with one rule.

Is “both lines under 50” really a quiet market?

After any other bar4.564.243.883.76

This is the reading that held up best, and only on EURUSD. When both lines were under 50, the next hour on M5 and the next three hours on M15 moved 12% to 16% less than after other bars. On gold M5 the effect was small, and on gold M15 it flipped: a “consolidating” Aroon came before wider ranges, not narrower ones. Range filters built for this job did the same thing in Choppiness Index vs ADX.

Did any Aroon rule make money?

Pips on EURUSD, dollars an ounce on gold, trades in brackets. The random rows match the cross rule’s trade count; every run was checked against its own random range.

Six of twenty runs made money after the spread. Only one passed every check: the ±50 oscillator cross on gold M5, +$0.46 a trade, in profit in both halves (+$0.04 and +$0.70) and above its random range of +$0.26. The first half was close to zero, so I would not call it an edge yet.

Gold M15 looked like the best chart, four rules in profit, but random entries with the same exit reached +$3.40 a trade there at the 95th percentile. None of the four beat that. The cross on EURUSD M15 beat its random range but lost in the first half, -0.12 pips a trade.

Why did fading Aroon work better on EURUSD?

On EURUSD M5 the fade was the only rule in profit before cost, +0.45 pips a trade, and after the 1-pip spread it lost 0.55, a smaller loss than the 95th percentile of random entries, -0.62. Following the same signal lost 1.25. So when Aroon Up jumped to 100 with Down at 30 or less, a fresh 2-hour high on EURUSD was more often a short-term top than the start of a move.

Gold did the opposite. There, fading lost more than following on both timeframes: -$1.41 against -$0.73 on M5 and -$1.82 against +$1.52 on M15. The same split showed up for the CCI breakout in CCI tested on forex: EURUSD tended to snap back, gold tended to run.

What would I do with the Aroon indicator?

  • Do not read 70 and 30 as a strong trend. The label was on 40% of bars and did not predict the next move on EURUSD.
  • Use “both under 50” as a calm-market hint on EURUSD, not on gold. It was the only reading here that described the next hour better than chance.
  • Do not trade the cross alone. 1 of 20 runs passed, and that one barely made money in the first half. Which period did best is in Aroon settings for MT4.
  • If you want a trend filter, compare it first. How Aroon and ADX label the same bars, and which one filtered an EMA cross better, is in Aroon vs ADX.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Aroon indicator?

Aroon counts how many candles have passed since the highest high (Aroon Up) and the lowest low (Aroon Down) of the last n candles, scaled from 0 to 100. A reading of 100 means the extreme was made on the current candle.

Does Aroon above 70 mean a strong trend?

Not in this test. Up at 70 or more with Down at 30 or less covered 39% to 43% of bars, and after it began, price moved 1 ATR in the trend’s direction first only 45% to 54% of the time, about the same as a random bar.

Is the Aroon indicator good for forex?

Not as a signal on its own. 1 of 20 runs of five Aroon rules made money after cost, in both halves and better than random entries, and all five lost on EURUSD M5.

What does it mean when Aroon Up and Down are both below 50?

That neither a new high nor a new low was made recently. On EURUSD the next 12 candles were 12% to 16% calmer after such a bar. On gold M15 they were 9.5% wider.

What is the best Aroon period?

Chande used 25, and many platforms use 14. In the settings grid neither period passed on EURUSD M5. The full grid of 24 settings per chart is in the MT4 guide.
